Simmonds who gave two beautiful Retirement gathering Hundreds of friends and Associates gathered at the Scarborough Civic Centre on Thursday, June 16 to honor Anson Taylor on his retirement as Director of Education for Scarborough. From - the surprise journey from home by school bus, complete with band, for Anson, Irene and family friends, to the final item on the programme, the evening was one of surpris- es for the honored guest. Anson's_many- years of service (40 in: all) were recognized by associates, civic leaders and summed upby the Hon. Thos. Wells, Minister of Education, who reminded Anson that, although retiring, his expertise will still be called upon in many areas. Hanging from the galleries were post-size -photographs of interesting events in Andson's life. One of these was a school photograph taken at Egypt Public School, his first teaching experience. One of the speakers remarked that the student-teacher-ratio in that school was consider- ably lower than that now permitted. Anson's qualities of warmth, sincerity and integrity were mentioned by all the representatives of chers', parents', main- tenance and associates' groups. Many gifts were presented, ranging from rod and reel to colour TV, stereo and speakers. Anson's gracious wife, Irene, received a bouquet of flowers as a reminder of the affection in which she is held. In his reply, Anson re- viewed the changes in the school" system during his years of teaching, and paid tribute to his staff and associates. He has not lost any of his keen zest for living and his enthusiastic drive for excellence has not diminished--retirement will Anniversary 'with other be a productive one for relatives in Mississauga on Saturday. Scugog Shores Museum is happy to announce that Mrs. Alva Thompson will be demonstrating Hairpin lace on Sunday June 26th from 2 until 4 p.m. The evening unit of the U.C.W. met June 15th in the gardens of Marion Carn- aghan. We all enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs. After paying a visit to Mrs. Carnaghan's indoor plants and admiring her beautiful violets everyone returned to the home of Barb Byers for our business - and lunch. Judi Mountjoy read the minutes of the May meeting which were adopted as read. Sharon Essery reminded everyone to save their egg cartons, cardboard rolls, plastic bottles and scraps of embroidery cotton, material and yearn. These items will be used by the Vacation School the second week in August. Joanne Lee brought us up to date on plans for the Bazaar and Fashion Show. Children from our commun- ity will be modelling clothes from: the children's Boutique on Wednesday, September 28th. Beginning at 7:30 the adults will be modelling clothes from "The Country Village and Country Classics'. Judi Mountjoy led the worship on the topic "NOW". The poem and article read were based on Stephen Leacock's state- ment, 'Life, we learn too late, is in the living, in the tissues of each day and hour." The group surprised Judi Mountjoy with a farewell gift and best wishes for her future in British Columbia.
