PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 16, 1977 -- 3 Mayor breaks deer hunt tie (continued) the fact that during deer seasons for the past two years, a helicopter patrol has supported staff deploy- . ed on the ground for enfor- cement and collection of harvest data. In 1977, two complaints were received from your municipality and both were promptly ~res- ponded to." Different dates for a hunt not feasible as the confusion ~ caused among sportsmen relative to different seasons in adjacent municipalities would very "likely breed problems, states the letter. "We trust that the provis- fon of additional enforce- ment effort in the Township will make for a successful three-day deer hunt in Scugog during 1977," it con- cludes. Taylor, while prepared to vote yes on the hunt, added a resolution that would pro- vide adequate public notific- ation not only of the hunt but also of the avenues to take in case trouble results. A motion issued by Taylor will seek information about who and when to contact in . case of trespassers and other related problems. Coun. Don Crosier said he was not about to say no to people who enjoy hunting as their recreational pursuit. He is also not prepared to tell area farmers no to har- vesting . deer on their own land. Refusing the hunt would be forcing these farmers to shoot the animals illegally. Coun. Asselstine was the most adamant in his oppos- ition. He said he was not prepared to allow people from all over Ontario come to Scugog to shoot area "We have.a. right to our wildlife." He said he could see no sport in killing a defenceless animal. 'In wartime the other guy can shoot back at you. I sup- pose that is more sporting than killing defenceless animals." Coun. Neil McLaughlin, voting against the hunt, said he would approve only: if hunters were allowed to use high-powered rifles rather . than the shotguns that he claimed maimed rather than killed. The idea was quickly put down by other councillors, who said that high-powered weapons are extremely dangerous due to their enor- mous killing range.
