Do share your news with us by calling 985-2624. by Betty Deeth A day. long 'Workshop for Volunteer Co-ordinators was held on February 24, at Durham College, sponsored by the Volunteer Action Centre (Oshawa) and a recently organized group that meets monthly called the Volunteer Co-ordinators of Durham Region, Attend- ing from the Scugog area were the following: Betty Deeth, representing the Scugog Social Planning Council; and Joanne Huston, co-ordinator of Volunteer Services, as well as Thelma McCreight, Clerk of Volunteers of the Community Memorial Hospital, The Workshop was designed to stimulate cre- ative thinking concerning the theme "Orientation and Training of Volunteers in Your Organization". The leaders for the day were Metropolitan Y.W.C.A. consultants Pat Sadavoy and Marjorie Bacon, assist- ed by local group leaders. The morning discussion 'was generated from the answers to the question, "How did you feel the first time you volunteered?", resulting in specific training needs being outlined. Methods were demonstrated by the leaders as they com- municated by various means, such as "brain- storming"' and planning movement into groupings to maintain energy ofthe par- ticipant for maximum individual learning. The discussion groups for the afternoon dealt with -- Recruitment, Community Education, Orientation, In- Service Training, Program and Personal Evaluation. Participation was limited to one group, after which the shared experiences were demonstrated to all. It was the aim of the leaders to provide those present with ideas to create their own machinery to use 'back home" and make the volun- 1976 DART SPORT - 2 door automatic, slant 6, power steering, one owner. An example of how we depend on volunteers in this area to met the needs is indicated by the statistics Good crowd Sunday night's concert in Town Hall 1873 drew a good audience of music lovers, . some from as far away-as Oshawa and Uxbridge. The Oshawa Civic Band and the Oshawa Festival Singers, both groups under excellent leadership, in turns filled the Old Hall with well-known melodies that brought continuous smiles of pleasure to those in attendance. The Band had just enough brass instriiments to make a wonderful sound as it played through toe-tapping marches, polkas, Spanish rhythms, a medley of old minstrel tunes and reached its musical climax in a superb rendition of Grieg's "Song of Norway". The Singers, all 35 of them clad in lovely blue floral gowns and ranging in age from 12 to 18, won immedi- ate admiration for their first number, "They All Call it Canada", The maturity of unified tone and their discip- lined singing gave this group command of their listeners as they delivered song after song in a vivacious, spark- ling manner. When the two groups com- bined in their presentation given by Mrs. Huston, the month of January, oe twenty-seven active volun _ teers worked, 319 volunteer hours, , at Memorial Com- munity Hospital. The Community Nursing Home has a volunteer pro- for concert of selections from "My Fair Lady", the walls of the Old Hall resounded with music that can only be called "great". Mr. George Quick, band director and Mrs. Elsie Dry- gala, choir Director, with accompanist 'Mrs. Sharon Perkins, and the Town Hall Committee can be justly proud of this Sunday Night's Concert, February 27, 1977.
