Lewies The month of December saw us get well under way into another ice fishing sea- son on Lake Scugog. Ice Formation came fairly early this year and our Con- servation Officers checked their first fishermen on December 2. By December 5, Officers reported up to six inches of ice on the and holding them to a score- / Lake. As in years past, to less second period. How- | ever, Bay Ridges skating ability overpowered 'Port establish some measure of fishing success and pres- sure, regular fishing sur- veys and additional enforce- - ment patrols are being con- ducted throughout the sea- son. As in all other endea- vours, our officers are ob- serving both the good and bad of the ice fishing frater- nity. The first warning for a violation was given out on December 11. This report will deal with both the good . and not so good aspects of the sport. Ice fishing on Lake Scugog is basically a fish- , ery for yellow pickerel. In December it was off to what has become a typically fast start. Catch effort data indicates that it took on.the average four hours of fish- ing for each pickerel taken. During the weeks to come the catch effort relationship is expected to increase to 11 to 12 hours of fishing per fish taken. Then late in the season shortly before ice -break-up fishing success improved significantly. While many reasons for this fluctuation are suggested, no theory has been substan- tiated. Yellow pickerel in the catch have been mainly in the one to one and a half. pound 'range. , However, there have been some in the five, eight and ten pound classes also. In terms of length, fish between 11 and 14 inches have been the rule and the largest measured ers have not recorded any other fish then pickerel being retained by the anglers. Through December and the first three days of Janu- ary, over 50 violations were observed by our officers. Most of these were consid- ered minor violations and warnings were issued. However, on January 2nd and 3rd, 13 charges were laid. The majority of viol- ations concerned the use of too many lines while others included unattended lines, unregistered ice huts, no snowmobile registration and | no snowmdjile helmets, Fill in coupon and mail to: Aquafine Water Refiner 101 Mary Street W. - LINDSAY, ONT.
