They reached the finals before bowing out to the East Enders from Toronto by a 4-1 score, "In the opening game of the tournament on Boxing Day, the Port Perry: Atoms defeated Wainfleet by a 7-5 score. The game itself was tremendously exciting as it went into a 10 minute over- time before the Port Perry squad secured their victory. Wainfleet opened up the scoring early into the game but Kevin Ferguson tied it up for Port on a pass from Tobbie Tobin. Port Perry went ahead 2-1 before the first period had ended as Howard Lee scored, assist- ed by Jeff Johnstone and Steven Lee. But with less than a minute to go in the second period Vaughan McKee fired a' high shot into the net and Port Perry was ahead 4-2. Heading into the third period it looked like Port Perry had the game well in control. But Wainfleet scored two minutes into the third period to narrow the score to 4-3. Then with one minute 30 seconds in the game, Wainfleet tied it up. With just 40 seconds to go Wainfleet took a 5-4 lead and the Port Perry squad was in a state of shock. But Coach Lee pulled the goalie and with only 18 seconds to go, Howard Lee, sent the game into overtime assisted activities the first period as Don Card drilled a shot to the top hand corner that beat goalie Wayne Dowson. Kevin Ferguson completed his hat trick by getting the first goal and Mike Dickson scored the second goal. Paul Bateman and Paul Goreski shared the netmind- ing duties in this game. On Monday, the Port Perry Atoms took on Oak Ridges in the next round of the Sutton tournament, This was another barn burner that also went into overtime, Mike Dickson opened up the scoring for Port Perry with an unassisted effort halfway thru the first period. There was some good scoring chances both ways but the period ended 1-0. Oak Ridges scored the only goal of the second period to tie the count at 1-1. In the third period, Port Perry started to control play but it was Oak Ridges who scored first to take a 2-1 lead. The Port Perry squad had lots of scoring chances in this period but they couldn't seem to find the net. Then with only 3 minutes to go in the game Jeff Johnstone tied it up assisted by Mike Pratt. The third period ended with a 2-2 score, In the overtime, Port -Atoms had no trouble find- ing the net as they scored no less than four unanswer- ed goals for a 6-2 victory and an advance to the final round of the tournament. Howard Lee scored two of the four goals in the over- time. Steven Lee and David Kemp got the other two. In the final game on Tues- day, the Port Perry Atoms met a strong squad from Toronto known as the East Enders and unfortunately found "themselves on the short end of a 4-1 score. The surprising thing about this game was the fact that the East Enders played most of the match short handed as they had no less than 15 penalties. The Toronto squad lead 20 at the end of the Ist period and were ahead 3-1 after two periods. - In this game the Port Perry squad was stop- ped time and time again by a fine goaltender in net for the East Enders. In that important third period the Port Atoms had numerous good scoring opportunities but they could not buy another goal.
