The score was tied in the third period 2-2. Pete Lane blasted home the winner from just inside the blue line and Rob Baird, who feared he couldn't hit a barn door, sealed the win with a goal into the empty net. Port Perry hosted their first two-day hockey tourna- ment over the Christmas holidays. It was a combined Bantam and Midget (also a first) series and was' a resounding success. Hockey fans were treated with some outstand- ing contests in both divisions. The Grant Menzies Pacers met their old rival Uxbridge in their first game. It was a seesaw battle with Uxbridge finally pulling ahead of the Pacers 4-3. Larry James opened the scoring for Uxbridge but Mark Lee came right back to. tie it for Port Perry. Dennis Franssen scored on a solo effort but Uxbridge again tied it up, and added one more to go ahead. Peter Lane tipped in one from Terry Flieler and Bill Owen tieing the game again but Steve Savage poked in the winner for Uxbridge. The loss put the Pacers into the consolation round and their second game was a lopsided 8-1 trouncing of the Markham '"'B" club. Tim Kane opened the scor- ing from Owen and Franssen and Markham tied it. That was the only goal that Mark- ham was to earn as the Pacers added seven more. Mark Lee had three, Frans- sen, Flieler, Perigoe and Taylor had singles. Baird and Adam had two assists each, and Taylor also earned an assist. The Consolation finals were against our own Midget "B" team and there was some apprehension before the game. Both teams wanted to win of course and the Bobcat "B" had the added incentive of toppling the "A" club. On the other hand the Pacers couldn't face a loss since Pacers tie Newcastle, lose to they were (after all) suppos- ed to be the "A" team. On top of that they were all friends, many had played as team-mates on other teams. It was even brother against brother, Danny Taylor on the 'Pacers and Jamie Taylor on the Bobcats. Tim Kane of the Pacers was facing his brother Paul as a coach of the Bobcats. It was a good game and sportsmanship prevailed (with only a few chides from both teams). The crowd was solidly behind the underdog Bobcats but it was Port Perry either way. Uxbridge Rob Baird opened the scor- ing for the Pacers from Rob Kemp. Franssen, Dan Taylor and Bill Owen had singles in the first period. Carey Fellows was credit- ed with a goal for the Bob- cats that did a dirty deflec- tion off Shewaga's stick and into his own net. The Bob- cats Tony Oxley scored from Ashmore and Jamie Taylor to close the gap in the third. The Pacers final goal was by Rob Kemp from Baird also a deflection behind Treen to even the tricky goal department. Final score 5-2 for the Midget 'A' Grant Menzies Pacers. The space under- neath the seating area is utilized for storage and dressing room areas. The Foyer-entrance-snack bar and viewing areas, as well as the ice plant, ice equipment area and press box are all at one end. "I just don't think we would have done any better for the money available and for the size of the commun- ity," 'said one committee member. "It's a beaut!"
