In the first game, Port defeated a scrappy, fast skating Lindsay team 3 - 1. Port opened the scoring just past the 3:00 minute mark in the second period as Henricks scored on a good wrist shot after picking up a pass from Burnett. Storry made it 2 to 0 early in_the third period as he came around the corner of the net, picked up the puck at the edge of the goal crease and snapped it by the goaltender. Jones and Horton drew assists on the play. Lindsay came back just over a minute later to cut the mar- gin to one. With 1:14 left in the game, Storry with Blay- one assisting got the insurance marker as he poked one in from a scram- ble in front of the net. The second game matched Port against the Country Strings from Oshawa. The lobby coaches from the big city had this game won by the County Strings before the teams hit the ice, however, there were 15 boys dressed in Blue and Gold Legion sweaters who just weren't convinced and backed up their convictions with a close 2-1 victory. Oshawa opened the scor- ing at the 6:16 mark of the first period and held the 1-0 lead at the end of thé period. Port had their share of play but particularily in the early part of the period had no luck around the net. Port tied the game early in the second period as Fewer let go a wicked slapshop from the blue line that the goal tender still hasn't seen. Jones and Horton drew assists on the play. Burnett scored the winner at the 4:45 mark with Henricks assisting. It was a costly victory for the Legion- aires as Young took a knee in the thigh late in the third period and had to be helped to the dressingroom. The Legionaires took a physical pounding from the bigger Country Strings team and several of the boys were injured but only Young's injury was serious enough to keep him out of the play. Keith Tremblay was heard to remark in the dressing: room after the game '"Those Country Strings will be play- ing a different tune on the way home." The championship game was delayed several minutes due to poor ice conditions. Lakefield who earlier had defeated Oshawa Canadians and a strong Fenelon Falls squad (previously undefeat- ed this season) seemed favoured as the team to win, at least that was the talk by the so-called experts behind the glass. Despite the painful leg injury, Young dressed and was determinded to play in this final game. However, after a few whirls on the ice during the pre-game warm up he was resigned to lend- ing his moral support from th bench. The early part of the first period was good end to end action with both goaltenders being called on to make some good saves. At the 3:45 mark one of Ports players was injured. The player was doybled over - gliding to the box along the boards, well away from the play, when a replacement was sent out. The referees rules the replacement stepp- ed on the ice too soon and we were penalized for having too many men on the ice. The penalty turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Lake- field were playing every man up on the power: play when Storry got control of the puck in his own end. He broke free of the pursuit, pushing the puck ahead straight up centre ice and 'with one man to beat, spott- ed Horton barrelling down the right side and fed him a pass at the blueline. Horton made no mistake as he waltzed in all alone to fire one into the net. . From that point on the Legionaires, to a man, checked feverishly to protect their one goal lead. It was down to only 1:55 left in the game before they got any breathing room. At this point Henricks slipped a pass over to Burnett who was left (continued on page 20) Juniors defeat Uxbridge 56-32 - PORT VS UXBRIDGE The Junior boys team opened the basketball season ' on a winning note by 'defeat- ing Uxbridge 56-32. The game proved to be a very "Scrambly"" affair. The Port team had over fifty turnovers but their full- court zone press forced the Uxbridge team into commit- ting more mistakes. Port managed to control the board at both ends through- out the game. Top scorers and rebounders for Port were George Cope, Bill Owen and Gord Simmonds. PORT VS CENTRAL This was gne of those games a team would like to forget as quickly as possible. The Central team took Port's press apart and then shot close to 50 percent throughout the game. On the other hand the Port team shot a meager 20 percent and went down to defeat 57-33. George Cope led Port's efforts in both rebounds and scoring. Dennis Franssen showed the way defensively with some fine steals. PORT VS MCLAUGHLIN Port returned to winning form and defeated a good McLaughlin team 59-50. The Oshawa team jumped out to an early 16-6 lead but the Port Perry squad brought a a--.--, It's Almost Snowmobile Time!! | Have your present machine made ready for winter. Service to all makes. Greg Fedyk, the leading assist man set up the fast break with some excellent passing in the third quarter. Bill Owen did an excellent job bringing the ball up against a full court man-to-man press.
