Close to 150 ratepayers gathered in the township hall at Oakwood to attend a "Meet the Candidates meet- ing'" chaired by former Mar posa reeve, Stevenson. At one point in the meeting the words "lie" and "liar" were used when the recreational facilities and council meeting quest- ions were directed at coun- EAR FREE TSU Raa TR Kh Charles' °r cil with Reeve Jackson Parliament being the recipi- ent of most of the questions. One irate ratepayer want- ed to know why council made a decision re: oper- ational financing of the arenas and then changed their minds without letting the arena boards in question know of the change. *I heard of the decision by the grapevine," he said. The decision made in the first instance would appar- ently have had the council pick up the yearly oper- ational tab re: mainten- ance, hydro, heat and insur- ance. When the new recre- ation commissioif' heard of this decision they asked council to reconsider and to MEAN |} FOREN Ny Mi . 3 PR He ARIS OAC TA CEST MN i ES think in terms of putting sonie 'rein' on spending, or as recreation chairman John Starr put it: "the council will not be able to r¢tire the arena debt in three years." Mr. Starr spoke briefly to the meeting about the set- ting up of the commission and 'what they hope to accomplish. "We hope to provide good recreational facilities for the township using an adequate budget in a responsible fashion," explained Mr. Starr. He mentioned that he would like to see the issu- ance of a monthly recreat- ion financial statement and that citizens, by merely making a phone call to the township office, would be able to get the information they required. Another ratepayer en- quired if Mariposa Counr i was taking into consider- ation the recreational re- quirements of the Woodville area. 'Yes, we are," . replied Reeve Parliament. The question was asked, "why two arenas?" Deputy Reeve Jack Coulson, who is running for the position of reeve against incumbent Reeve Jackson Parliament, answered the question by making reference to growth areas. "Oakwood, as a growth area, has just about reached its growth point but the southern part of the township is a definite growth area which will need the recreational facilities of a Little Britain recreation centre," said Mr. Coulson. Reeve Jackson Parli- ament, commenting on de- cision-making, made refer- ence to decisions made under pressure which would be changed at a later date when council had time to reconsider their decision. Another ratepayer asked if this way of decision-* making was the way Mari- posa Township affairs have been run over the past few years. According to Reeve Parli- ament, the present council meets twice a month in day-long sessions, "and sometimes we burn the mid- night oil". One of the new candidates running for council advo- cated as a part of his Pplat- form, the holding of one of the meetings at night. A. ratepayer voiced the opin- ion that since council was utilizing her taxes, they should provide the oppor- tunity for 'her and 'other ratepayers to attend a council meeting." © Reeve Parliament replied that the citizens of Mariposa have the right to attend council meetings, now. He intim- ated that for the smooth running of council, rate- payer input is set up under an_ appointment system.
