_ Brooklin Society hold annual meeting The Brooklin Horticul- tural Society held their annual meeting on Wednes- day, November 24th, at the C. E. Building. in Brooklin. A delicious pot luck supper preceded the meeting. Miss Viola Gillion of Mount Albert who is the District 5 director of the , Ontario Horticultural Association was an invited guest for the evening, Miss Gillion presented the first and most important award of the evening. An Ontario Horticultural Association Service Certificate is the highest award a horticultur- ist can receive and is only given to those who have really. earned it. Cyril Wick, past president of the Brooklin Horticultural Soci- ety is indeed.one of these dedicated people. Mr. Wick is well known through Dur- ham Region for his work in horticulture. Among the list of Cyril's achievements was the reorganization of the Ajax "Garden Club. Mr. Wick has been growing vegetables and flowers all his Jife and his retirement years have been dedicated to passing on his knowledge to others. He has been a guest speaker at many of the societies in the district, 'as well as a guest speaker at the Whitby YMCA's "Take-a-Break' program. The last two years, he has taught classes in Gardening at Durham College in Oshawa. He was instru- mental in working with the town of Whitby in an advis- ory 'capacity when they were planning their first ever allotment Gardens. He has looked after and super- vised many civic plantings done by the Society in the area. His dream for yéars was that Brooklin should have their own parkette or point of interest in the commun- ity and notices t most visitors to the village\go to. the arena. Hence, when the new addition to the Brooklin Memorial Arend had. begun, Mr. Wick approached the Town of Whitby on behalf of the Brooklin Society to draw up a plan to improve the area in front of the arena and make a truly Memorial Bed where the Brooklin Legion Branch could hold their memorial services. Over the period of a few years and with the co-oper- ation of the Town of Whitby, foundation shrubs were planted and a crescent bed established in front of the newly built addition. Under Mr. Wick's direction and planning a raised bed was planted and serves as a living memorial of the war veterans. Also, when his son Gordon served as president a locust tree was planted at a ceremony of the great horticulturist and agriculturist Heber Down, and a bench placed in the parkette. The work at the Brooklin Memorial Arena is almost complete and with the recent paving of the parking lot it can be com- pleted next spring, and Cyril's dream come true. Mr. Wick was on the execut- ive board. of the Horticul- tural Society for 8 years. As Miss Gillion presented the certificate she said the fe dubai i deadhan SATIS AE Soa va tihvaithd y v4 ET RIS LR \ { Fa daha dodiiabeiid lai dds esl sui fnuodesulasertmn tad atin alma lion nda habpantiis ES Few YJ ERIM IIASA ARN LIB | Fed 3 SOA TY Te RS Iota | . fle resly ENGL TE ht Nw A (Rs : Artarel Ss NYS , : ' : Ie, thoi dt wih apd nda recognition was well de- served.
