Grand Champlon Bird of the Royal Winter Fair. id Winner of 'the best standard type of nearly 5,000 poultry; the Rhode Island Red, bred and owned by Brunton Farms of Port Perry. Pictured here, Royal Honorary Chairman Alfred Ahiers presenting the Bickle Trophy to Dave-(left) and Art Brunton, grandson Mike Brunton proudly joined in. Well deserved award for local breeder For Art Brunton, of Port Perry, 50 years of work with chickens paid off recently when he was awarded the Grand Champion Bird award at the Royal Winter Fair. Winning this award has been a life-long dream for Mr. Brunton, as he has been raising Rhode Island Reds since the age of 14. It was in 1974 that his dream almost - became a reality, winning the Reserve Championship at the fair that year. Although having been in- volved with chickens since the age of eight,,it was in 1942 that Mr. Brunton start- ed his own hatchery. Prior . to that time he operated on a small scale but by then he had expanded and _his hatchery produced 8,000 chicks during the year. Art has received many honours for 'his numerous contributions to the poultry industry, but his most un- usual came after sending five dozen hatching eggs by air to the government of Pakistan, and asking that gthey accept the eggs as a gift from Canadian farmers. -. He was surprised a short time later when he received a call from Ottawa advising him to report to the Pakis- tan Embassy in Ottawa the next day. In Ottawa he was presented with a beautiful hand-wrought silver tray, FOR COUNCILLOR-AT-LARGE -- Elect -- JOEPODRES v Previous Municipal Experience v Energetic : 'v Dedicated to work undertaken * VOTE MONDAY, DECEMBER 6th ADVANCE POLL SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27th. fe LH 4 A i £, & decanter and six silver cups as a gift from his Excellency Al-Haj Khwaja Nazimuddin, governor-general of Paki- stan. The presentation was made in the presence of some. 500 dignitaries of many nations. Dave Brunton, Art's son has been a partner in the business since 1946 and the '] award made at the Royal Winter Fair is the culmin- ation of years of hard work ° that have finally paid off. Art does not expect they will. win the award again, but when. you're raising champion calibre birds like the Brunton's are...there is a good chance that they could repeat the achievement.
