18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, May 27, 1976 PORT & PERRY A Ballard "Lumbermen' In- termediate Softball Club opened the '76 season last . night, Wedpesday, ' in Oshawa against the Oshawa Junior "A" team. The local club will again be competing in the Oshawa City and District League with three teams from the city and one each from Whitby and Markham. The Lumbermen will again be playing on Thurs- day nights at the Joe Fowler Memorial Park at the lake, but their opening game at 'home scheduled for tonight (Thursday) at the park, has been postponed due to the field not being in playing condition. Two new players who will definitely be in the opening line-up are Doug Christie at first base and Ron Redman in centre field. These two players are expected to add some much needed hitting, while the regulars from last season will be Ken Davidson at third base, Jody Williams at short stop, Hugh Johnston' and Bill Wana- maker doing the catching, with Bill St. John, Gene Hurst, Bob Baxter and Brian Smith handling the outfield positions. . Ken Goreski and Laurie Williams will make up a strong pitching combination as they did last year, and . when the team gets a few games under their belts, they should again provide the local fans with some fine - softball. Debbie Lee Outstanding Advance to COSSA The LOSSA Track Meet was held last Monday at the Oshawa Civic Stadium. The top four in -each event qualify for the COSSA Meet which will be held Tuesday, May 25, in Napanee. Debbie Lee turned,in an outstanding performance by capturing first in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Mary Baxter finished third in the Midget 400 metres, Tina Ruhl finished a strong 2nd in the Senior 100m. hurdles and Kim Owen captured fourth place in the Junior Javelin. The Senior Girls' Relay team. which consits of Debbie. Lee, Tina Ruhl, Chris Donnelly and Cindy Baird placed third "which qualifys them for the COSSA Meet. : Winners in the LOSSA boys track and field: Midget Wade Oosterman second in 200 metres; John . Cornish students took part in a track-a-thon held at the high school on Saturday morning. The idea is to give training for track and field and at the same time raise some money towards physical education activities. The kids were sponsored to the tune of 5 cents per lap with a maximum of 5 sponsors, and it was limited to students from grades 5 through 8. Here we see a group of runners just completing the 10th lap, of their one hour "By Tracy Hogg i Over 60 students from R.H. Cornish Public School participated in a trackathon, held at the Port Perry High School track on 'Saturday, May 22nd. These ambitious students ran cohtinuously four ohe hour competing for the greatest number of laps in their age group.
