PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 10, 1976 -- 21 Broombai play-offs begin this Sunday CAWKERS BUTCHERS 2 K.R. COULTER 0 Cawkers played one of their best defensive games of the year picking up their first shutout. The win put them in a tie for fourth place as long as Brians lost their game. The outcome of Brians game will determine the playoff positions. Both teams played well in the first and second periods for at the end of the second the score was still tied at 0-0. Cawkers opened up the game with 5:20 gone in the third period when Colin Wackett scored on a good passing play from Don Phinney and Doug Scott. Then just four minutes later Don Phinney won the faceoff in Coulters end and put it back to Doug Scott who rifled a screen shot which Don Phinney deflected in. Mark Kenny picked up the shut out for Cawkers. BROOKLIN LEGION 3 SMITS CYLE & SPORTS 2 This game meant nothing for either teams for a playoff position, as both teams al- ready had a playoff spot wrapped up. The score was 2-1 for Brooklin before the four minutes had expired in the game. Brooklin started early with just 25 seconds gone, Bill Down slipped it'in from Ken Vipond and Ken Down. Then one minute later Brooklin scored again- when Ken Vipond scored from Bill Down. Smits came back at the 3:25 mark when Don Gray stole the ball from a Brooklin defenseman and went in to score on a break- away. Brooklin scored their third in the second period at 5:55 when Ken' Down scored from Bill Down. Smits scor- ed their second goal but were a little late to try and tie the game as there was just a minute left. Pat Thompson scored this goal from Dale Crawford. UTICA AUTO BODY 0 BRIANS SUPERTEST This was one of the jest games of the season vith both teams playing excelicnt defense.. Utica had many chances to score but just couldn't seein to slip it by Brians goaltend- er Wayne Cox. Brians were havirfg the same problems as Uticas goalie Dennis Symes was making good saves when they were needed. The tie for Brians was just as good as a win, as all they needed was to pick up one point to go ahead of Cawkers and clinch a playoff berth. Both: Brians and Cawkers where in the same position last year fighting for fourth place in the playoffs. Cawk- ers made the playoffs last year, but this year Brians fought back to trade them places in the standings. Playoffs start next Sunday - March 14 with Utica playing Brians and Brooklin playing Smits.
