LJ ® by Dean J. Kelly THE GREAT BANK ROBBERY Have you been taken in by those huge signs in bank windows showing 9 and 10 percent interest on your money. Read the fine print. Most accounts pay a low. depression interest of only 3 percent a year. Its paid every 6 months on a minimum balance...that means that you could have $10,000 on deposit for 6 months less ONE DAY and you get no interest. During the last federal election it was revealed that banks pay NO INTEREST on 46 percent of their deposits, at a time they charged the highest interest rates on loans in banking history. The average paid on deposits worked out to be just 4'% percent. Nice money if you can get it. No wonder banks can build skyscrapers competing with each other for the highest ivory tower. Bank presidents complain of forvign banks threat- ening their "stability". What they mean is they don't want real competition from banks paying higher rates - and-or giving better service. Banks never had extended hours until the trust companies forced them to. While banks lobby with the federal government for protection from outside banks they continue to expand their services in foreign countries. The Royal Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal have branches all over the world. Banks have been known in the past to pay the lowest "starvation" wages. Employees are often overworked and underpaid. Meanwhile locked-in captive Canadian customers are being robbed by the banks and their unbelievable low 3 percent interest. (other accounts pay more interest but you cannot write cheques) Inflation-riddled customers need at least 11 percent interest to come out even to the value of their money when it was deposited - a year earlier. You must have a minimum of $100 on deposit for each check or you will be charged 20c service charge, on 'each cheque. DOUBLE LOSS: The dates interest is calculated on - usually April 30th, should be moved ahead so that - people who save ahead to pay their income tax wouldn't lose a full six-months interest. The banks are fully aware of the millions withdrawn before interest . dates on which they pay no interest for the previous 6 month period. BANK PROFITS WERE UP 80 "PERCENT last year according to former Auditor General Maxwell Henderson (W-5 on crv network), December 21, 1975. At least $100 million in federal money (your taxes) on deposit with the banks NO INTEREST is being - paid. NOT ONE CENT. So says former Auditor General Maxwell Henderson. Even at 5 percent that $5 million lost. The banks are paid millions by the government for their sales of government bonds. Where has the money gone? Well some of it has gone to foreign companies (Canadian banks don't like foreign banks) in the form of loans to buy out Canadian industry. Foreign companies don't have to put up actual hard collateral--they use their powerful credit rating of the parent foreign head office as a guarantee. The Toronto Star reports (Feb. 11) THE BANKS ARE THE LARGEST CONTRIBUTORS TO THE POLITICAL PARTIES. One bank alone gave $100,000. to the Liberal and Conservative parties, nothing to the N.D.P. There are 7 major banks...Get the picture? Prime Minister Trudeau has established a Royal Commission (delaying political tactic until the issue is dead) to find out who runs Canada. Professor John Porter at the U. of T. published the 'Vertical Mosaic" showing the immense total power of the banks over industry and the people. Peter Newman folled with a 500 page '"The Canadian Establishment". Many of the decisions made by the bankers and business took place at Sturgeon Lake near Fenelon Falls. Peter Newman calls them 'The Sturgeon Lake Pack". It even includes Simon Reisman, Deputy Minister of Finance from Ottawa. Power and more power. (Complete list on page 393.) Both are available in the library and make fascinating reading. Instead of wasting millions, Trudeau could have spent less than $20 and found the answer. Arthur Hailey's Best Seller is THE MONEY CHANGERS (about bankers). He's a Canadian author of Hotel, Airport and Wheels. _ Next to the government and the banks, the major groups controlling your life are the union leaders. TEssETRTRIESIERISES ABSENTEEISM by teachers (mostly elementary) according to trustee Gord Goode cost $322,000.00 in 1975. Supply teachers cost Durham $35,249.71 in November alone. The total cost to run our schools was almost $55 million. We have truant officers for children who "'skip" school...maybe we need them for some teachers, who swing the lead' too often. How sad that the only thing worth noting in minor hockey was the unsports- manlike conduct of a few members. Granted the scene was not one that minor hockey, or for that matter anyone else from Port Perry, was proud of, but hockey is not badminton. It is a tough, body-contact "sport and sometimes 17 and 18-year-old boys are bound to retaliate or even insti- gate. THIS IS NOT THE RULE! That is where the challenge of coaching lays. There are many, many men who have spent many, many hours, for whatever reason, often at some expense to try to teach boys from age five, both the fund- amentals of the game and some extra lessons as well. Hockey can and does teach us more than just the game. A boy doesn't make an All-Star team and is disappointed, only to find himself a valuable member of a team in the house league. He is successful and is proud of his achieve- ments.
