18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1976 PORT Score 22 goals in two games PERRY Wheels defeat Brighton y After sitting idle for al- most two weeks, the Toyota Wheels were facing Brigh- ton who had just finished a tough series with Lakefield. Would Brighton be tired or would the Wheels be rusty? Would Brighton be hot or would the Wheels come out rested and ready? In the opening period it looked like Brighton might fill the Port Perry net and Charlie Durward came up with some super stops. Playing shorthanded and the face-off in the Wheels end, Brighton scored with a quick shot under Durwards pads." But minutes later as Brigh- ton collected themselves in their own end, Mike McQuade stole the puck and moved it over to Phil Coch- rane who returned it to Mike on a nice play that tied the scqre. In the second period Rob Evans let go a hard shot from the blue line that was tipped in by Phil Cochrane. Seconds later some more digging paid off when Phil tucked in another one from McQuade and Evans. While the Wheels played shorthanded, Mike Healey was cruising in front of the Brighton net when the puck came his way and on a quick backhand, scored, stretch- ing the lead 4-1. Late in the middle period the Wheels had one of the few opportunities to use the power play and Steve Jones whizzed one past the goalie . on a shot from the point. Durward played well and Schewaga who came on in relief also made some dandy saves. 6-1 was the final score. The contest at home on Thursday was really no con- test at all, as the Toyota Wheels rolled over Brighton, 16-1. Is it that the Wheels are so good or is Brighton really that bad? The Port Perry team came out flying and scored twice in the first 40 seconds. It was 5-0 at the end of the first and 13-0 at the end of the second. Again every member of the team except the goalies picked up at least one point. Stu Cochrane and Mark Lee counted four goals each while Phil Cochrane had a great night with three goals and seven assists. Defensemen Mike Healey and Terry Flieler played well with Flieler getting a goal and two assjsts while Mike Healey picked up 4 assists. Also scoring for the Wheels were Rob Griener, . Rob Evans, and Bill Haynes. Said ki District 15 Ladies Tankard Playdowns were held in Whitby recently with nine clubs competing. After a layoff of approximately two weeks, the local gang were not as sharp as they should have been. On February 20, the Mal- malt gang travelled to Ux- bridge for the second game of the playoffs and were edged by the score of 2to 1. As in the first game, Ux- bridge opened the scoring. The score came at the 1:15 mark of the second period after a close fought first period with both teams having great opportunities. This score stood up until the 7:18 mark of the third period when Jeff Johnstone scored for Port unassisted. approximately minutes to go, Port picked up two questionable penal- ties and while they were off Uxbridge scored the winning goal. Port picked up six penalties compared to Ux- bridges two, and this was one of the reasons for the loss. It is pretty difficult to win games playing short- handed and in order to pro- long the series, these will have to be cut down. Next game was in Port Port on Monday, February 23 and if more games are necessary, they will be in Uxbridge on February 24, and back in Port on February 26 at 7:30. INTRODUCING THE.
