POR PERRY A LVL Flamingos ready for play-offs Defeat league leader Cobourg 10- By Wayne Venning The Port Perry Flamingo Pastries Juniors will meet the Cobourg Cougars in the first round of the Central Ontario Junior "C' Hockey League. In spite of two victories on the weekend the Flamingos were unable to catch the third place Stouffville *"Clip- pers" and had to settle for fourth spot and the best of seven series with the Cougars. The remainder of the schedule is yet to be played with teams playing this | SPORTS SHORTS | IN OTHER LEAGUE action on the weekend Lindsay de- feated Stouffville 6-1; Co- bourg 9-4 over Frankford on Friday night; while Stouff- ville edged Bowmanville 6-3 on Saturday. On Sunday vight Frankford all but clinched the final playoff berth with an 8-6 win over Lindsay. week, but the tentative other series will be Lindsay and Bowmanville and Stouffville and Frankford. There have been no dates set for the start of the series and there will be no game on Sunday night at the local arena. FLAMINGO 10 COBOURG? After a poor effort, but a 7-6 win over the Bowman- ville "Red Eagles" on Thursday night, the Flamin- gos raised some hope among their fans on.Sunday night as they out scored the Co- bourg club 10-7. The Cougars did not dress two of their top players, Terry Lewis and Alex Crowder, but the 'local club played strong offensively and if they can continue their strong forechecking and skating they could cause some problems for the Cougars.. Doug Christie playing one of his best games of the season fired a pair of goals as did Bob Marquis, with single goals going to Jamie Malcolm, Dave Jobb, Carlo Cammazzola, John Kane, Willie Thorton and Bill Newton. Randy Fife had a pair for the Cougars. If the Flamingos can maintain their effort of Sun- day night and tighten up defensively, they should provid some good hockey for the fans. Atoms reach finals in tournament Malmont Farms Atoms reached the finals in the Peterborough Tournament by playing the best hockey they have all year. In the first game on Fri., January 30, the Malmont gang met Fenelon Falls and came out. the winners by the score of one to nothing. This wasn't the best game of the week- end but the difference in the teams was the goaltenders. On Saturday, January 31, Port met Norwood and came out the winners by the score of 7 to 3. Port started out slowly and found themselves down on a couple of occasions but as the game progressed they came on stronger and were complete- ly -dominating . the play 'before the game was over. In the second game" on Saturday, the Malmont squad met Peterborough and defeated them by the score of 2 to 0. This was a close fought game with Port taking the edge in play and enabling them to enter the semi-finals on Sunday. At 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, the opposition was Point Ed- ward and after a close- fought game, which saw Port come back to tie the __score_on several occasions, the local squad finally pre- vailed and won the game by the score of 6 to 5 in the first overtime period. This set the stage for the final game at 12:30 where the Malmont gang met the team from Lakefield. This was also a close fought game with both teams playing very well, but after it was over Lakefield had come out the winners by the score of 2 to 0. Our team. deserves congratulations not. only for the way they played on the ice but on their good conduct off the ice. More details will be reported when the game sheets are sent from Peterborough. PORT PERRY ATOMS DROPPED BY ORONO On January 28, the Mal- mont Farms Atoms travell- ed to Orono where they lost by the score of 5to 1 to a well skating and passing club. Orono opened the scoring at the 1:12 mark of the first period but Port tied the score 26 seconds later on - a goal by Mark Goreski, assisted by Brian Henricks --and----Mike Pratt.----Orono-- completely dominated the rest of the game even though the local squad had several chances to score. Leads Generals to victory Mark Jobb, a Port Perry boy, and former Flamingo Jr. C player, was credited with being the key to an Oshawa General win Sun- day, January 25, which end- ed an eight game losing streak for the Junior A club. Jobb, a 1975 draft choice from Whitby who has spent most of this season injured, led the team to their victory with his aggressive hard hitting play. By Zoe Rohrer The Port Perry Snowmo- bile Club held their general membership meeting Sun, evening in the Scout Hall with a good crowd in, atten- cance. This coming Sunday, Feb. 8, is the big day when many club members will make the 100 mile trip in Snowarama for the Ontario Society for Crippled Children. Last year the Port Perry Club brought in close to $4,000. Trophies will be awarded at the next meeting to the top two club members who earn the most money in pledges this year. The C.0.R.S.A. games day held Sat. Jan. 31, was a great success. All those who participated in the events had a very enjoyable day and several trophies were taken home by Port Perry club members. Our own club games, day will be held this Saturday, Feb. 7, in Kent's Bay, north of the dock. Registration will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The games will begin at 1:00 p.m. and are only open to club members. A cookout has been plan- ned for Sunday, Feb. 22nd. This is a good chance for a family outing with toboggan- ing for the children, hot dogs and hot chocolate for all. The day will start with a Trains - Boats Snowmobilers have busy 7 schedule in February trail ride from Kent's Bay to the cookout, leaving at 1:00 .m. The: Snowmobile Drag Races will be held Sunday, Feb. 29th. There are classes for men, ladies and children driving stock machines and mens super-stock and modi- fied. The 'Port Perry Snowmo- bile Club is enjoying a very active season this year with 188 members to date. At least all this winter weather is good for something!
