0) Information centre considered to be qualified success (continued) were 100 per cent in favour'. "Generally," said Mr. Wilsqn, "people were there for the information. He said less than a quarter of those who attended voiced direct opposition 'to the project." Even then, points out the roads technician, the object- iori seemed to be that people realize the project should be carried out, but don't want it anyway. i "It may not be what we . alllike, but the road happens to be there and other altern- atives are not economically feasible'. Starting date of the pro- ject depends on other work such as utility relocations, but the Region wants to get underway as early in the spring as possible, "We'll be tendering as early as possible...probably around the end of March and hope that work can com- . .mence as soon as possible after that." said Mr. Wilson. He sald that completion will be in the fall of this year, but that the final surfacing of the road won't be carried out until spring of 1977 to allow for settling over the winter. The loss of 'trees...a major concern among those objecting to the project...will be kept to a minimum, according to regional officials. In all, about 30 to 32 trees will be cut down. "But the works department will replace as many, if not more .than they remove," said Mr. Wilson. In - fact, the works department points out that almost as much has been allowed on the Lilla Street budget for landscaping and tree replacement as in the rest of the region. He said that good-size trees will be planted to replace those cut down. The trees will be from 1%. inch diameter to 4 inch diameter. ~ According to é Ey Cae BENE ad | The magnificent seven TR7 bold wedge line of the great international sports-cars, overhead-cam power-key machine by the sports car o Front wheel drive for terrific traction in mud & snow e Dual braking system © 43 miles per gallon gasoline economy landscapers, trees of this size would probably do better than relocated 6-inch trees. Relocations tend to stunt the growth of trees, and the smaller trees would probably catch up or sur- pass such transplanted trees. ~~ Officials also point out that landscapers will be working with contractors during the time that the road is being built. Idea is to protect such borderline trees with special attention such asretaining walls and expert care. Another advantage of the $1 million project for the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1976 -- 9 municipality, according to the region, will be the elimin- ation of water flooding prob- lems in the area. Due to the terrain of Port Perry, water collected in the area of the high School moves down the natural slope toward the lake. Lilla Street runs paral- lel to the slope, resulting in flooding problems. The pro- ject will provide catch basins and ditches to feed water into the Lilla system in'an effort to stop flooding now. Preparing for a future date ° when Port 'Perry Streets feeding onto Lilla are pro- vided storm sewers, the Lilla Street system will provide appropriate "plugs" for future township connections. The system is designed now to handle the increased load if and when the town- ship decides to feed into the system.
