Qe The new Scugog Memorial Arena will get their water from a well rather than The expenditure for instal- ling a well system was part of the package put before from the village system. Scugog Township Council by 3 55 1) 3 i _ with John Gast +: od » r A hazardous bird is Agriochavis Ocellata Who's danger, to Dad, doesn't matta, So on carving the beast for the holiday feast, He pierces his Medulla Oblongata. -Ominous words far a joyful occasion, perhaps; but triflers should remember that since the day cave man first slobbered and gnawed his way through Drumstick of Gobblersaurus Rex, many thumbs have been served along with the drumsticks. It was different, back then. The pioneers, for example, would shoulder trusty old Nellie, shove a turkey call between their lips, and trek to the nearest turkey range. Many a pioneer, caught white-handed with a stretch-necked gobbler in his clenched fist, wound up talking turkey with the local medicine man. There were many other dangers. The old adage 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" may well have derived from the Fron- tiersmen, who oft times were unsure if the feather behind the bush-belonged to a turkey or a tomahawk-wielding redskin. | can see it all now. The log cabin...the warm, crackling fireplace...the eager faces of momma Pilgrim and her three youngsters as papa Pilgrim does the honours. Today, alas, it is different. ' Gone are the days when the gobbler had to be blasted on the hoot by a pioneer who would pit all his woodlore and hunting skills against the elusive bird. Who today can even identify turkey-tracks? Even the tedious but satisfying chore of plucking the bird has been eliminated by the advent of the quick-freeze process. Today we pick the frozen fowl from the meat counter, drag it to the car, and heave it into the trunk. Once home, the rock-like bird is thawed in the bathtub, then lifted into a micro-wave oven, The twisting of a dial, and PRESTO...the turkey is served. i Dad, armed with a two-speed electric carving knife, performs the turkectomy with one eye on the turkey and the cher on the dinner guests. They're all there, too. Dear mother-in-law, the cousins, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces. All are poised with knife and fork in hand, experiencing muscle spasms as they ready for a gluttonous attack on the disected fowl. And before you can say 'The drumstick's 'mine."" WWHHHHRRRRRRRR. Off goes dad's thumb, clean as a whistle. Nevertheless, the holiday season is still the time we acknowledge our good fortune, and the turkey is as much a part of it as Santa is. It's just the holiday withdrawal period that bothers us dads. After all, what husband hasn't suffered when, for the sixth day after Christ- mas, the "What's for dinner' question is answered: "Cold turkey.' The move to the well system came following a report presented to council at a previous council meet- ing that revealed it would cost almost $80,000 to ser- . vice the arena with" Port Perry water. The project would mean an extension of the Port Perry waterline along Simcoe Street from the Flamingo Pastries plant area to the corner of Simcoe and Regional Road 8, then along the road to the actual site. Council questioned if they could justify extending the pipe at such enormous cost to the general water user, a project - that - would serve only the arena. It was suggested that future devel- opment in the general area of the arena could be made to pay a portion of the costs but council felt there was no guarantee that development would go in that direction. According to arena com- mittee chairman Howard Hall who attended the meet- ing, the arena committee had originally considered using a well system, and had decided against it only after consulting engineers Totten, Sims and Hubicki questions availability of enough water pressure to operate a sprink- ler system. The sprinkler system has since been decided against.
