It speeds up the treatment process when mixed with raw sewage. The sludge separates. from the mixed liquid and settles out in a settling tank. The remainder, which is. purified waste water flows into a small sand filter for polishing and final disposal. The sludge from the bottom of the settling tank is pumped back into the aeration tank where the process is started all over again. 1. Raw sewage enters the aeration tank and is mixed with air (oxygen). 2. The mixed liquid is pumped into the settling tank and the activated sludge solids settle to: the bottom while the clear, purified waste water flows out of the system into a sand filter. 3. Twice a day, the contents of the settling tank are returned to the primary aer- ation tank to maintain the sludge within the system. Solids will have to be pumped from the aeration tank every 4 to 8 years. 4. The sand filter is used to dispose of the clean water. It is extremely compact when compared to a normal septic tank. It is only 10' x 12' x 52" deep. A 'red mud" layer in the filter removes phos- phates from the restored water; a remarkable new development in household waste management. OK. TROUBLESOME.
