28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1975 "8 Will seek LIP grants for local improvements About $150 million has been made available under the restructured federal Local Initiatives Program to spon- sor job-creating projects, and a number of groups in the . township have indicated they will apply. According to Scugog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm, about four or five application forms have been picked up at the township office, including the Scugog Community Arena committee who are investigating the possibility of using LIP money to help pay for arena site prepar- » ations. Mayor Malcolm said he preferred organizations and groups within the community to sponsor the projects, rather than council. He said some other communities have found that community- sponsored projects end up being a headache. The prob- lem, he points out, isn't getting the project going, but coming to a stop when the Lip money runs out. He said many communities have been faced with continu- ing the projects with munici- pal funds when federal funds run out. "But we are willing to give all the help we can toward any such project," he said. In its four years: of oper- ation the program has cre- ated a quarter of a million jobs that put earned purchas- ing power in the pockets of citizens who might otherwise have . been without such income during our Canadian winters. Local" governments have | participated in previous LIP campaigns and their exper- tise in zeroing in on projects that will most benefit com- munities has often resulted in some extremely interesting and worthwhile endeavours. In recognition of this the federal government has amended the program this year to permit municipal- ities to submit projects up to a value of $150,000 per pro- ject, as compared to $100,000 for other sponsors. We are again asking municipalities to initiate projects that they would not be able to under- take without this assistance, and which create new jobs, especially in areas of high unemployment. Municipal projects cannot be subcon- - tracted - and these applic- ations, as well as all others will be reviewed by Con- put FRIENDLY "PHILOSOPHER sv: THE WISE Working SEE \ DOESN'T LISTEN : © WAGe BROS. In order to minimize problems of local coordingtion, we are once again taking great care to ensure that the projects we support not be of a continu- ing nature. Projects may begin as early as November 3 but not | later than January 24, and all' must be completed by June 26, 1976.
