How about spending $745,000 and using the remaining $5,000 for a municipal bus service to the Uxbridge swimming pool? | ° It's a start. There are those, of course, who say schools have many of the facilities we mention here and, yes, they are more and more being put to good use by the. entire community. Yet this is a half-way measure. School's are still schools, and are geared for students.,.and so it should be. The crunch? Money, of course, so here's a few ideas. -How about a local lottery to build a' local sports & facility? -How about a national lottery to build sport facilities all over the country? -Industrial blackmail, whereby the fat cat is docked for each consumer he rips off. . -A Fat People tax, applied to the size of the inner tube around the waist. : -A Skinny People tax, applied like negative income tax. -An Average People tax, applied any way possible. The fact that we are on our way to replacing the old arena before someone falls through the ice, however, is due to the hardworking efforts of the committee, who beyond a doubt, did what they could with what they had, (and then some). Considering the obstacles (all $750,000 of them), that's a minor miracle. And there's been plenty local residents who have complained about indecisiveness of council. , With $200,000 to raise in the community..... ....now 's the time to replace tongue power with a little action. Ashburn News The regular monthly 'meeting of the Ashburn W.M.S. group held their meeting at the home of Mrs. E. Heron, last Wednesday night, with twelve members present. Mrs. F. Daw, vice presid- ent, had charge of the meet- "ing and took the Easter theme for her devotions. Mrs. W. Hopkins led in prayer, and the president, Mrs. R. Batten, brought us the study for the evening which was a bible study, "God the Holy Spirit" in which every one partici- pated. B The next meeting. will be the Easter thank offering and will be held in the church. Miss Dorothy Kellar - of Peterborough, our Pres- byterial resource worker will be our guest speaker. There was a large gather- ~ ing at the Community Centre on Tuesday night of last week when Dr. Peter Cave, Professor of Geography at University of Toronto was the speaker. Dr. Cave gave an outline and explanation of the planning and develop- ment of the surrounding area --over-the-past-ten-years. Mrs. Eva English of - Manilla spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. D. Ashton and family and Mrs. H. Doble. Also, Mrs. Lloyd Pugh of Pickering visited them one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Drew Leaper "and son, Ian, of London , Mr. and Mrs. W. McAndless and family of Don Mills, Mr. and Mrs. K. Reynolds of Aurora, and Cpl. Robert: Rowe of e Lahr, Germany, visited with Mr. and Mrs. E. Heron during the weekend. It was good to see Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lehman back safely on Sunday from their trip to Rome, Italy. Don't forget the ping pong % tournament for the young people on the 16th and 17th of March. If you want inform- ation about the tournament call Heather Richardson. Probably due the cold Sunday morning and a lot of colds and flu around, there weren't as many out at the morning service as usual. Rev. McEntyre took his sermon from St. Matthew, "The Water of Life" and the Jr. Choir sang '"'Happiness is the Lord". Next Sunday morning at Sunday School all pupils and adults will receive a centen- nial pin. These pins are given by the Sunday School to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Presby- terian Church in Canada. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family of the late Mrs. Nelson Ashton. The funeral i service was held on Monday at the Carson Funeral Home, 'Brooklin, with Rev. Mc Entyre officiating. Follow- ing the service, the family and friends gathered at Burns Church, and the ladies kindly served lunch. Our thought for today is - Take time to worship, it is a highway of Reverence and washes away the dust of earth from our eyes.
