[ admit also. to being strongly prejudiced re the airport controversy. But, let each of vou be assured, your reaction would be vastly different if you were the ones to be unceremoniously uprooted (or perhaps cere- moniously would be a better word as it certainly is a public spectacle but not at all pleasurable for those of us who are directly involved Arrives home before mail Dear Sir: The mail must go through-- but when? A card sent to us from Daytona Beach, Fla., was postmarked Feb. 16th, 1975. We received it on Mar. 7th, 1975. The lady sender was home twelve days before the card arrived. Some service!! Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Smith, R.R. 5, Sunderland, Ontario. and chose to live here long before an airport was planned). When I become angry 1 usually scrub the floor or write a letter. Liz Cally is obviously the older of the two. Her words express the sameness that we have read so many times. She is pushing for. more economic growth and devotes a good deal of her letter to roads. and. the way the adults of to-morrow will be able to travel to their place of work. Suzanne Catty's subject is also roads and her travel on horseback along said roads. Those two should get together and maybe Suzanne would be able to rent space at Liz's "Beechroft Farm' and thus ride her horse in a safe manner away from all those abominable cars and trucks that travel on the roads but not across farmer's fields, or are our future workers going to travel only on horseback? It is true that some of the best farm land is not being farmed. Those who were strictly farmers are not to be blamed for leaving the area since the airport announce- ment. You cannot move from one farm to another without a great deal of fore- thought. and no matter how SEE THE 'NEW FORDS! 4 NEW ROTARY 3 NEW ROTARY MOWERS. TILLERS. AN BEACH EQUIPMENT Hwy. 47 - Uxbridge - 852-3326 you say it, money is what is needed to have a productive farm these days. Therefore it is virtually impossible for a young man lo become a farmer now unless he falls heir to the family farm. The government needs to . practice what it is preach- ing, namely stop the un- necessary spending and devote its time and money to a large experimental farm producing from this A-1 land the food of which the land is capable. Hindsight will be no good in 50 to 100 years if there is no food for hungry stemachs and no fuel to fill the hungry stomachs of all those air- planes. A person who becomes as emaciated as those from the 3rd world countries will not be inter- ested in flying and there are far more of them in the world now than there are of us. Think it over Mesdames Calty. you are both asking for the best of both worlds but deny it to the rest of the world's_population. Is that i RTF ERAS TAN Ai pride stiay role Feels council should have stood by original decision Dear Sir: It saddened me to read that after an enlightened attitude regarding deer hunt- ing in the township - the local council has now reversed its decision because of pressure from a small vocal minority. A law change because so many 'people have broken that law is hardly reason enough to legalize deer hunt- ing. Council would have received more respect from the non-vocal majority had they shown some guts and stood by their decision. In that hunters consistent- ly break the law - needing written permission from a landowner is hardly going to stop them from trespassing. As a member of the non- vocal majority - I would like to be able to walk over my own land without fear of original an honourable or compas- sionate reaction of a really thinking person? Just sign me One of the expropriated. being shot. 1 also think my horses should have the same right. Every year hunters wander beside the fence line across the road. 1 wonder how many motorists driving along Reach Road know hunters are lurking just on the other side of those trees. Ihave yet to find a bullet that knows enough to stop at a fence line. The stories of near misses simply boggle the mind. Some examples:- A farmer's vest is pierced by a bullet which kills his dog standing beside him: - Two workmen repairing a garage roof nar- rowly missed by bullets: - Post-boxes and no trespas- sing signs shot down: Seagulls shot off barn roof: - township dump shot: - Pigeons shot off barn roof: - robins shot from hydro wires along highway 12: - People shooting up and down Marsh Hill Road - (across it would have been bad enough) - etc. Frankly, I'm tired of not being able to walk over my own land during the hunting season with safety. And please don't tell me I'm only referring to "slob hunters". I've known too many hunters - many from the so-called best hunting clubs in Canada and the States. And - I've never met one who didn't admit to me that he hunts out of season and exceeds the legal limit. I can only ask - when are the politicians going to stop listening to the small vocal and well-organized gun lobby and start using some common sense? This town- ship is much too populated to allow any open so-called sport hunting. How about prosecuting poaching instead of legalizing it? Sincerely, Marilyn Douglas.
