But if prices are compared between those in Canada and some of the European countries, Canadians are pretty fortunate and have little to complain about. This writer, only recently returned from a brief visit to Norway and found prices generally much higher than here. Even some of the essential food commodities were a great deal more expensive. One price that comes to mind in particular is meat. One Ib. of the better cuts of beef is priced at about $5.50. Bread and milk is much the same as here because of government subsidies. There are many other items including clothing, 10 to 25 per cent higher than in Canada. Luxury articles such as liquor and tobacco, the Norwegian Government taxes to the hilt. A bottle of Scotch whiskey sold in Canada for $7.85, is obtainable by a Norwegian customer for 85 kroner (Norwegian currency) or about $16.50. A package of 20 cigarettes is double in price, about $1.50. One gallon of gasoline priced in Canada at 60c to 65c, reaches the incredible price of about $1.50. An automobile considered a luxury in Norway makes anyone think twice before a purchase is made. No cars are manufactured in the country and the majority operated -are of the smaller type, either of European or Japanese make. An Opel Record, manufactured by General Motors in Germany, is priced in Norway at about 60,000. kroner or about $11,500, and can possibly be compared to a medium-sized car in this country. Comparison here is made only with Norway, a country today enjoying quite a high standard of living. There are other countries even worse off, so when we talk about inflation, a World-wide adversity, Canadians are certainly much better off, at least now, than most other countries. Christianity at its best Bruce McLeod, past moderator of the United Church, is going to spend the next year doing "anual labour in a Costa Rican village, the current -ue of The United Church Observer reports. Dr. McLeod resigned in November from his " pulpit at Bloor Street United Church, Toronto, and said he wanted a year off to plan his future. He told The Observer he had decided to spend the year, beginning in July, ""hoeing and hammering" to build a village for abandoned children in the central American country. The village is the first of several planned by a new Canadian organization, Pueblitos Inc. Dr. McLeod says it's hoped the first houses will be ready for the children by October.
