La Leche League is the international organiza- tion which offers informa- tion and encouragement to those interested in breast- feeding. The -Convention provides an opportunity for parents, doctors, and nurses associated with the League to share information so that they can continue to give help to the mothers who turn to them. Human Milk: A Unique Gift of Love; A Natural World Resource-the theme of the Convention-is also the title of the keynote address to be delivered by Dr. Derrick Jelliffe, internatio- nally known pediatric nutri- tionist. Dr. Paul Gyorgy of Philadelphia. who for many vears has diligently re- searched mother's milk, will speak about its unique com- position. These eminent physicians are members of the Professional Advisory Board of La Leche League International. Other featured speakers will include Lee Salk, Ph.D, Dana Raphael, Ph. D., Maria Piers, Ph. Port Perry La Leche League has been active for one year and Oshawa La Leche League for three years. Informal meetings are held in members' homes monthly to acquaint those terested with the physical, psychological, and practical sides of breastfeeding. The energy crisis and other shortages have empha- sized the need for the highly industrialized nations to return to more natural ways of life in order to conserve the resources still available to us. For some of the world's impoverished people human milk can mean the difference between starva- tion or survival; among all peoples it is both a very basic natural resource and a unique gift of love. Start your perennials in July Most of the perennials in your garden have finished flowering and the matured flower stems are ready to scatter their seed. "If you want to start your own perennials, seed from nearly all spring and early summer flowering perennial plants may be sown now," says Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food horti- culturist, R.E. Fleming. Delphiniums, oriental poppies, yellow alys- sum, aubretia and shasta daisies are all easily grown from seed in the home garden. Prepare a seedling. bed in your garden or in a wood 'flat. Carefully sow the seed from your own plants or local garden center. Moisten the seedbed, then cover it with burlap or clean straw to conserve moisture and aid germination. When the seedlings are large enough, thin them out to about 3 to 4 inches apart, and grow them on during the summer. Normally, by Sept- ember, the seedlings are large enough to be transplan- ted to your perennial border, ready to flower next year.
