Ontario tourism now streamlined TORONTO--How Ontario plans to streamline its tour- ism development was outlin- ed here last week at the first joint . meeting of the pro- vince's 10 new travel associ- ations and the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. The first giant step was the re-organization of 39 former regional tourist councils into 12 vacation areas embracing the province's entire tourism plant. This was accomplish- ed after months of consulta- tions with ministry tourism division officials which set priorities for tourism devel- opment and promotion, and the role the tourist associa- tions will play. The ministry's funding structure provides an out- right $30,000 administrative grant and a $45,000 cost- sharing grant to each travel association. In Northern Ontario the ministry will absorb 90 per- cent of the latter amount for marketing, research and de- velopment projects. In East- ern and Central Ontario the ratio is 75 percent and 50 percent for the rest of the province. In leading the discussions, Fred Boyer, executive direc- tor of the ministry's tourism division, said: 'Ontario tour- ism is now a $2 billion-a-year business and if resources of people and dollars are made available to us, we foresee $3 .1 billion by 1979'. Mr. Boyer added that $1.2 billion of the 1979 projection would be accounted for by U.S. and overseas visitors. The 10 operating associa- tions come under the minis- try-sponsored Ontario Trav- el Association = Program which is coordinated by the ministry's Doug Jure.
