Cafik was speaking at a businessmen's luncheon sponsored by the Liberal Association for Port Perry, Reach 'and Scugog at the Port Tavern in Port Perry. Stanfield's proposals, said Cafik, are not only unwork- able but inequitable. "They are intended to freeze in- comes at low levels and prices at higher levels," he claimed. "What about the commis- sion salesmen, the car sales- nran, and the self employed who may not have any money in the past six months and suddenly find they can- not make any with the freeze on incomes?" he asked. Cafik wondered how Stan- field would implement his inflation policy if elected. "They don't have the mach- inery needed for it" he added. Over a hundred liberals paid $2.75 to have lunch with, and listen to, Cafik as he listed the achievements of his party when in power. The defeated budget would have reduced income taxes and removed the 12 percent sales tax on clothing and foot- weat a benefit of $280 million to the consumers. "Besides there was the $10,000 allowance spread over 10 years while buying a house; an anti-profiteering bill; and reduction in tariffs on imported consumer goods - all of which were voted down by the Tories" and NDP" he said, charging the two oppostion parties had put their interests ahead of the interest of Canadians. The Liberals have policies to combat inflation in a 'rational manner' Cafik claimed, "policies which are not mere easy gimmicks." Inflation, he said is a "world wide and a domestic problem caused by a short- age of goods and suplies." The Liberals, he promised, would take 'hard core decis- ions to roll back prices, and introduce selective controls to counter inflation." The Liberals also have proposals to bring in a guaranteed supplement- ary income for the working poor to take them off welfare rolls, Cafik revealed. Responding to Tory critic- ism about big spending by Government, Cafik said 90 percent of increased govern- mental spending was on increased old age pensions and - other similar benefits and tying them to the cost of living index. Referring to the leader- ship issue Cafik said he had not been saying too much about it because he believed it was 'self evident.' "However" he told his audience '"'you don't have to compare Trudeau with Christ. You need to compare him with Stanfield or Lewis. "He's clearly got more to offer us than any of the others" he added. He repeated his plea to voters to reject the Tories as an alternative because they had behaved 'irresponsibly' in defeating the government. Later Cafik answered questions from his audience most of them related to housing, taxes and federal policies on pensions and sup- plen Earlier with os his honour at Port Tavern Friday.
