P.P.H.S. places fifth at Oshawa track & field meet Port Perry High School was placed fifth in. overall performance at the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association's track and field meet at Oshawa last week. They earned 203 points. Dunbarton" finished first with 302 followed by O'Neill with 270 points, Oshawa Catholic with 238 points and McLaughlin with 233. This was the first time a school from outside Oshawa won the team championship. 19 schools participated in the meet. The following Port Perry students won points for their team: Senior Boys: 3000 metres Jan Rensink (third) with a timing of 10:32:0 Long Jump: Kerry Hors- len first) with a jump of 19 ft. 7 in... Triple Jump: Kerry Hors- len first) with a jump of 40 ft. 7 in. . High Jump: Kerry Horslen (first) with a jump of 5 ft. 10 in. Discus: Roy Gaal (first) with a throw of 114 ft. 5.5 in. Senior Girls High Jump: Sue Bond (third) with a jump of 4 ft. 6 in. Shot Put: Sandy Cochrane (second) with a throw of 28- ft. 11 in. Discus: Sandy Cochrane Split opening games VanCamp Juniors Softball Club opened the South Ont- ario Fastball League Sche- dule last Tuesday night at the local Ballpark by drop- ping a close 6 - 5 decision to the Markham Aces. Laurie Williams pitched the complete game for the losers and while he allowed only 4 hits to the visitors, his mates made 5 errors in the field, which allowed four unearned runs by the aces. Ken Young was the winn- ing pitcher for Markham, he relieved Ted Lewis in the 4th inning. Centre Fielder Grant McLaughlin had two of the Juniors five hits, with Roger Holtby and Brent Heard getting singles and Ken Davidson a long triple to deep right field. The Juniors appeared very shakey in the field at times, but this was their first game of the young season and with four new players in the line-up, it will take a few games for the boys to adjust to their positions. On Thursday evening May 23, VanCamp Juniors played their first away game of the season; as they travelled to North York and walloped the Home Club 17-2. The local club really put on an offensive show with the bats in this game as they produced 16 hits off four North York Pitchers; this included four home runs. Grant McLaughlin again led the Hit Parade with two tremendous home runs fol- lowed by Laurie Williams with a Homerun and a triple. Brent Heard had three sin- gles. Brian Smith and Bob Ryan two singles each, while Doug Christie a home run and Rob Monroe, Ken David- son, Rick Campbell and Neil McLaughlin all contributed a base hit. Laurie Williams again pitched the complete game and allowed only three hits, including a home run by Bob Brown. Dave Lee was the losing pitcher for North York. The Juniors have a busy week ahead as Whitby comes to town tomorrow night. (Thursday). This should be an exciting contest as the Whitby Club are Intermed- jate "A Classification and should give the VanCamp Club all they can handle in the hitting and pitching dey artments (1 Sunday. June 2, the Juniors travel to Aurora for a 7:30 contest; and on Tues- dav June 4. the Greenwood Intermediates will be at the Waterfront Park to continue their rivalry from last season, when one game in Greenwood went 14 innings before they defeated the Juniors 4 - 3.
