Fin -- - Ch id ibias + Last Port Perry council meeting quiet -- emotional Lg TIM: q € With a slight choke .of emotion from Reeve Bob Kenny, Port Perry passed quietly and unobserved into the pages of history Dec- ember 27. All members of council were on hand for this last meeting of Port Perry council. As has been the case so often over the past 102 years this last meeting was observed only by a single Port Perry STAR reporter. Councillors passed around chocolates which has been given by friends of the village, and Reeve Kenny presented a box of choco- lates to the reporter for the newspaper staff. Then, with olvions emotion, Reeve Kenny commented, "I feel that we have 'had a pretty good council this year. I think we have got a lot done. It is too bad we did not get to finish our second year." The reeve had reminded council earlier of some of the history of the Village. NEW HISTORY PUBLISHED Using the newly published, "History of Ontario County," as his source of information Mr. Kenny pointed out that. at one time Prince Albert was the largest community in the area and the Prince Albert Observer the main newspaper. A few influential people lived in Port Perry and owned land here they were BOOK - holding in speculation. It seems these people used their influence to not only ensure that the railway "came to Port Perry, but also to make sure that it did not go through Prince Albert. With the coming of the railway the value of land held by Port Perry's version MEND-N-FIT S Me. MEND'N. FIT JL& YOULL BE SEEING ME IN THE ADS RUN BY YOUR FRIEND THOMSON Heating & Air Conditioning 985-3365 of the Family Compact increased { sharply. The village begga to develop and grow while Prince Albert began to die. The Village was incorpor- ated in 1871 with Joseph Bigelow as its first Reeve. At the December. 27, 1973 meeting Deputy-reeve Phil Orde expressed regret that the minutes of the first council meeting held in 1871 could not Be read. Fire destroyed those records many years ago. The railway which made the Village boom in the last century is also gone. In fact the only monument to that early history which has so far escaped both fire and, "progress," is the original Town Hall built in 1873. The building is at the corner of Queen and Lilla Streets. It is in bad need of repair and the only portion still used is the basement where Port Perry's Hydro Commission stores some of its equipment. NEW COUNCIL TAKING OVER One of the first decisions that council will have to make will concern the future of the old town hall. If repairs prove too expensive the historic building may be torn down. Reeve Kenny will serve on that new council, along with Port Perry councillors Reg. Rose and Robt. Brinkman. Other members are council- lors Neil Hunter of Reach, Jerry Taylor of Scugog Island, Don Frew of Cart- wright and Mayor Lawrence Malcolm. Burketon Mr. Tom Trick who has been a patient in Port Perry Hospital has returned home. We all hope he will soon be well and strong again. Mr. Charles Cooper, Orono was a supper guest of Mrs. W. Bryan on Sunday. Hearty congratu- lations and all very best wishes are extended to Mr. and Mrs. B. He also paid tribute to Port Perry's former Clerk-treéasurer John Raines who he said served the village so well for many years. } Rev. Reg Rose said a few words in appreciation of Reeve Kenny just before the Village was laid to rest, then undertaker Grant McDermott seconded the final motion adjourning the last meeting, and Port Perry was lowered into the pages of PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, January 3rd, 1974 -- 7 Old by-laws repealed Are' you a law abiding citizen? If, at any time before 9 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 1973 you made any ob- scene picture, drawing or writing at put it anywhere in Port Perry where the public could see it you are not. Up until the time the by-laws were rescinded they were legally in effect which means that if you kept a house of "ill fame," kept a gaming house or sped a horse in town you broke the law.
