As the joyous season arrives, the vibrant sound of carolers is heard in churches, at family gather- ings, in groups going from house to house to celebrate with song. } Carols are as much a part of the Yuletide as the tree, 'gifts and Santa himself. It all began with the first carols in the 13th century, icana. The earliest English carols weére composed anonymous- ly, perhaps by clergymen or court musicians. Simple tunes and strong rhythms were characteristic, and the musical form featured a re- frain, to repeat before and after each stanza. Words were written, gen- erally, in the English ver- nacular- or in "macaronic" form ---- a combination of English and Latin. The first printed collection of carols appeared in 1521. It included the "Boar's Head Carol," still sung during Christmas dinner at Queen's College, Oxford, England. Even then, however, the practice of passing on car- ols orally, from generation to generation, continued. Among these were carols in ballad form, such as "I Saw ried this disapproval them. Atter the Restoration, in 1660, caroling was once again permitted and the custom slowly revived. Some of the most popular carols date from the 18th and 19th centuries. These include "Adeste Fideles," possibly by Francis Wade; Three Ships" and "The Cher- ry Tree Carol." . Caroling fell into disrepute in the 17th century, and car- ol singing was forbidden by the English Puritans. Christmas, Florida, population about 300, handles an average half-million pieces of mail during the Christmas season. Located near Orlando, it began as a fort that was completed on Christmas 1835. The word "wassail" de- rives from the Anglo-Saxon "waes hael" which meant "Be in health." Wassail was a mixture of mulled ale, eggs, curdled cream, roast apples, nuts and spices. * kh hk hk Kk Mistletoe, said to hold a license for kissing, was re- nowned in ancient times for many mystical powers. Be- cause of its pagan associa- tions, it was long forbidden in churches. A German legend held that, if a sprig of mistletoe was carried into an old house, the ghosts of the house would appear and answer questions.
