A comet, * naturally, is made up of two parts. The first is the head or nucleus and the second part is the tail. The carefully observed recent major comets reveal through their radiation that the head is made up of ice, solidified gases and some meteoritic debris. These materials composed of carbon-di-oxide, amnonia and nitrogen form a huge mixture which assumes the shape of a large ball sometimes several miles in diameter. Kohoutek's head is between 25 and 30 miles in diameter. There were four major comets during the sixties but none were significant in comparison with Kohoutek. There have, however, been some significant comets in the-past. In 1908, an explosion rocked a remote section of Siberia. Trees in an area about 30 miles in diameter were completely flattened. 100 miles away, people were knocked off their feet. 400 miles away, the rails of the trans-Siberian railway heaved. Upon investigation, 'no craler was to be seen. Scientists did find a large number of huge pellet-like objects. A later investigation verified the fact that a comet of sizeable proportions had collided with the earth. The pellets were rocks of meteo- rite material. Major comets have been observed for many years. Hailey's comet has been -noted regularly since 240. B.C.! It also appears on the famous Bayeux tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Hailey's" comet made one of its once-. every-76 year appear- ances on the eve of William the Conqueror's invasion of Britain. . This comet named after astronomer Edmund Hailey will appear again in 1986. It was last seen in 1910. Possibly the strangest comet to be seen on this planet was Biela's comet. It made its regular six and three quarter year visit in 1832. It returned in 1839 but was difficult to see. In 1845 it had split in two: In 1852 the two segments were seen to be more than a milion miles apart. The skies were care- fully watched in 1859 but the comet, or its parts, failed to appear. By 1866 astronomers began to be concerned about its failure to reappear for in that year again it could not be found. However, in 1872, skywatchers in western Europe were treated to the spectacular display of a meteorite shower. Obviously Biela had disintegrated! Comels disintegrate to form meteors. The chemical = composition, of our planet] P and comets are vastly different. Could they have had a common beginning?. Observations of the comet Kohoutek will help in provid- help to answer that question. Kohoutek can still be seen in the early morning sky about an hour before sunrise and in the same lotation as the sunrise. It appears not much different from an ordinary star of average brightness. Around Christmas time it will disappear behind our sun as it follows the orbit shown in last week's Port Perry Star. the evening western sky shortly after Christmas. It should be clearly visible three days before the next issue of this paper. Mark your new 1974 calen- dar on January 7 to 11 and January 14 to 18 for on those nights, if the weatherman co- operates, the roof of Port Perry High School will function as an observatory as we watch Kohoutek's spectacular journey into the A Rs of EA youd SY Kohoutek will reappear in future.
