Cac = ot if DE « Controversial Solzenitsyn film here this December 14 Alexander Solzenitsyn, the Soviet writer, has recently become front page news in the western world. Not so in Russia. In 1970 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. The Russian go- vernment refused to allow him to accept the prize, primarily because of his persistent criticism of the Soviet dictatorships from Stalin to the present. His criticisms and appeals for freedom of the press and freedom of speech have earned him an eleven year sentence in Siberia. A sen- tence which he completed recently but failed to silence him. Being the creative stal- wart he is, the experience in the Labour camp gave him material for another book entitled "One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich." This book has recently been turned into an award * winning full length colour film with Tom Courtenay in the lead role. This film has been given top reviews by - critics from Judith Crist to Playboy magazine. The film attempts to portray the ex- periences and emotions of a labour gang serving sen- tence in Siberia. Solzenitsyn, along with Sakharov, the soviet nuclear scientist are presently striv- ing to lead a civil rights movement in Russia today. They have been singled out by the Soviet government for K.G.B. interrogation, ostra- cism by soviet press, and other pressures known only to themselves. Last month 82 Nobel prize winners appeal- ed to the Soviet government for Sakharov's freedom to speak at various public en- gagements. The penetrating two hour movie "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' will be shown at Port Perry High School this Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 8 p.m. The showings are open to the public. The film is being sponsored by the Port Perry High School students council and organized by History and Politics students at the school. An evening of Song The audience was small but enthusiastic December 8 as students of Port Perry High School performed Gil- bert and Sullivan's "Trial by Jury" at the High School ~ Auditorium. The cheers drew an en- core. The performance followed only one month of rehear- sals and featured the senior choir. The show billed as "An Evening of Song", also fea- tured, the girls' ensemble performing a number of novelty numbers. A member of the audience commented afterwards that 'when performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, some groups emphasize the music and some emphasize the costumes. The senior choir emp- hasized the comedy. The cast of "Trial by Jury" included David Litt, as the judge; Bob Barr as the defendant; Judy Howsam as the plaintiff; Jim Fox, as the plaintiff's lawyer and Darcy Wallace, as the usher. A comet for Christmas Period of ~~ by Paul Arculus Part 2. In last week's Port Perry Star, we introduced you to some basic facts about the "new" comet in our skies; :omet Kohoutek. It's visib- ibility is becoming more significant. Skylab 3 astro- nauts have taken numerous photographs of the comet. Newspapers and popular magazines are making fre- quent mention of its appear- ance and, as occurs with all significant celestial events, crackpots and seers are having a heyday with pre- dictions regarding its omen. (omet to disappear The "Children of God" are warning that the comet will destroy the "wicked" United States. Scientists, on the other hand, are now quite sure of its path in our solar system as it begins its turn around our sun. It will come within about 75 million miles of the earth on January 5. This date will herald its closest ap- proach to the earth. How- ever its period of highest visibility will be between January 10 and January 16. Due to the fact that the tail is polarized, it swings away from the sun, and during the two weeks of its highest visibility its tail will appear to preceed the head of nu- cleus of the comet. This is one reson why its tail is only slightly visible if you watch it this week in the south eastern sky at almost the same location as the sun -. rises but two hours earlier. There are probably more than 100 billion comets in or near our solar system. How- aver, very few come within reasonable range of the sun where they can be studied by astronomers on earth. How- ever, those that have come within oyr observable range reveal that a'comet has no" tail until it comes close to the sun. The sun's energy vapor- izes the outer layers of gases which surround the head of the comet, and sends this material out into a huge tail. Kohoutek will be of valuable assistance to astronomers due to its size and closeness to the sun. These factors will help in determining, more accurately, the nature of comets, and thus the nature of our own universe. More on comet Kohoutek next week Manchester News Rev. Wylie of Oshawa was guest speaker in Church Sunday. ~ Regular service next Sun- day 11:15 a.m. Rev. B.R. Pogue in charge, The U.C.W. ladies held their Xmas party on Thurs- day, Dec. 6th in the church. An afternoon of Xmas music was enjoyed ending with lunch and a social hour. The church was nicely decorated for the occasion. Everyone was reminded to save the postage stamps. Mrs. Meta Holtby has re- turned home after spending several days in Innerkip with Bert and Mary Holtby. Now that the snow is here, don't forget to feed the birds.
