Rehearsals for concerts, pageants etc. are in full swing.. Nine 4H girls had their winter outing by attending a show in Oshawa on Friday evening. Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Nicholls kept them in line. On Saturday thé Brownies were riding high on a wagon at the Santa Claus parade in town. Mrs. Carr was again on the job with Mrs. Loberge and Mrs. Burgess as helper. Next Saturday Santa will come Ho-Ho-Hoing into Sea- grave at about 3 o'clock. His headquarters will be at the store and everyone is invited for coffee and treats. Another sign of Christmas is that Mrs. Gladys Short arrived home on Thursday after a long visit in Mani- toba. Visitors here this week-end included Mr. and Mrs. Donald McKinnon of Lucknow with the Morley Bruce family. We were quite interested to read in last week's paper of the Eagleson -- Diamond wedding. That 10 year old picture surely didn't imply that either Mr. or Mrs. E. are fading away. They are still going strong. By the way Mr. E's 99th birthday is only 10 days away. On Friday evening Mrs. Jack Short entertained at a baby Shower for her friend Mrs. Peter Robinson. Pre sent from around here were Mrs. H. Short, Mrs. Ker 'Short, Mrs. Cliff Short, Miss Shirley Short Tobin. We Seagravers moved Mother's Day ahead ahout 6 months so had a baptismal service on Sunday when four quite small children were presented. They were -- Amy Lynn daughter of the Neil Wanamakers, Troy Jonathan, son of the Martin Fishers, Brett Jason, son of the Keith Puckrins and Steven Alfred, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Welland. With -a change of ministers, there was a slight change in the service but everything was fine. At the same service Mr. and Mrs. Les Third were received into membership by transfer from Milliken United Church. All this happened within the hour allowed for service then some of the families con- cerned had gatherings at home. The Neil Wanamakers had a real luncheon party. The Wanamakers present were Mr. and Mrs. B. L. of Seagrave, Ron, Leona and family of Oshawa and Bill and Sharon of Toronto. "We have endorsed their resolution and will be meeting with .our MPP this week and forwarding that endorsement to Toronto with him. The region has been most receptive to the feel- ings of residents in my area and the public works com- mittee has shown its respon- sibility to the public and I think that's just trem- endous,"' Worboy says the commit- tee's main objection to the proposed land fill site-aired under development - is that the liquid wastes that will be dumped with the solids may seep into the ground and begin to pollute area water - sources, Although the approval was granted with the stipulation that only solid wastes be dumped. Worboy says there are only three inspection officers - to regulate such sites between Toronto and Kingston and proper policing of the ministry's instructions just couldn't be effective. It was estimated by the applicant at the time of the hearing that as much as 5 million gallons of liquid, chemical waste could be deposited at the site. And the site says Worboy, is only approximately 1,400 feet from the headwaters that form the Oshawa Creek and other springs and water well sources. HIDDEN Besides the ministry disre- garding all these objections. Worboy says there is more to its granting the approval "than meets the eye." The Canadian Pacific Railway, he says, may be directing a spur line into the area to service the site. Residents in the area, he says, discovered from per-, sons claiming to be CPR surveying crews that a sid- ing has already begun to be constructed. "CPR is building on its own property, so it doesn't need any kind of permit," he says.
