Every available pickup truck, trailer, or what have you was called into service to help store the papers until a_second tractor load could be arranged. Successful Scout paper drive A very successful Paper Drive on Saturday, Septem- ber 15th. Resulted in so much paper, that a large salvage truck from Oshawa was filled, and a substantial overflow landed in Mr. G. Nelson's driveway and garage. It is noticed that a OMB approves Reach sub- division zone It took only half an hour for the Ontario Municipal Board to approve an application from Reach Township to rezone a piece of land on the wpe ide of the Oshawa SOS: Prince Albert, The land V Charles Santos of Toronto who also owns land across the street from the area. Mr. Santos property across the street is zoned for industry and the K.R. Coulter plant sits on the property. There were no objections to the rezoning application. If more people would see by bruce arnold The local election of Octo- ber 1 will not be much different than the elections people of this area have been used to. Under the old system we picked. five councillors. Under the new we will pick seven. Under the old system we ele cted a reeve and a deputy reeve plus three or- dinary councillors. Under the new, the name of the' reeve has been changed to mayor, and the name of the deputy reeve has been changed to regional coun- cillor. There will be five ordinary councillors. . Under the old system we had four councils, one in Port Perry and one in each township. Under the new the four will sort of get married fit to save this salvage, and put it out on '""Paper Day." Possibly published dates of when collection is to be made, well in advance, would encourage more par- ticipation. Any concrete suggestions would be well appreciated. Election 1973 (shotgun style) and form one. There will no longer be a council in Reach Town- ship or Cartwright, or Port Perry. We are all joining our friends on Scugog Island and we will have only one coun- cil for the entire Township of Scugog, as the new town is to be called. Under the old system the reeve and deputy reeve went to county council and repre- sented us down there, in addition to sitting on the local council. Under the new system the mayor and the regional councillor will rep- resent us down there, in addition to sitting on the local council. Just as our four local councils are joining to form only one council, so our two (continued on page 3) Mark withdraws from race Lonny Mark © municipality _ The current regional elec- tion campaign has taken on a new twist with the an- nouncement this week that public school trustee Lonny Mark is not seeking votes. Augustino Simone, bus- iness agent for local 562 of the International Wood, Wire and Metal Workers Union, said Tuesday that Advance poll Sept. 29 If you are not going to be in town to vote on election day, October 1, you should register to vote in the ad- vance poll Saturday, Sept- ember 29. Check with your munici- pal office regarding advance poll regulations. If you don't vote in the advance poll you should mark an X at seven places on the ballot; one each for Mayor, Regional councillor, Local councillor and your area ward councillor, plus two choices for school trustee. You will also be asked to help choose a name for the region. The STAR does not care who you vote for, for council or school board (we would not admit it if we did) but don't forget the name. DURHAM. Mr. Simone was test- ifying before a one man royal commission into vio- lence in the Ontario Con- struction industry. Mr. Ceasaroni is a prin- cipal in a number of con- struction and development companies. He is alleged to have made the $70,000 bribe offer on behalf of his North- town Drywall and Con- struction Ltd. He is also the main principal in Port Perry Dev- elopments Ltd., which plans to build a marina and apart- ment complex near the Birdseye Centre Park.
