\ TARGET PRACTISE in Mr. Ambrose gravel pit goes on without the owner's permission. Council approves Queen St. mall for western weekend Port Perry council has given its approval for a two day mall on the town's main street during the Chamber of Commerce western weekend from Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12. . Queen Street east of Perry St. and Water Street between Queen and the arena will be closed to vehicle traffic for the weekend. Temporary trees will be placed in the roadway, storekeepers will move their displays right out onto the road and at least one restaurant will operate a sidewalk cafe during the three day festi- val which will draw thou- sands of out of town visitors to our mall for the second year in a row. In addition to operating the open air market place the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a number of entertainment events in the arena, Latcham Centre and Palmer Park. A horse rodeo and flapjack barbeque will take place at the fair grounds. The Kinsmen Club will sponsor a Soap Box Derby on Saturday. Canadian Visual Exposi- tions will bring its midway to town, complete with stage coach rides for kiddies and Peter's- Performing Dogs. Most of the activities which proved so popular last year will return along with a number of new attractions. Illegal gravel pits will be discussed at zoning meeting Twenty eight months ago the Township of Reach council approved an amendment to its zoning by-law, and applied to the Ontario Municipal Board for the final approvals neces- sary to make the amend- ment legal. When the 0.M.B. finally gets around to conducting a public hear- ing -6n the amendments next August 20 the by law changes will be two and a half years old. So the past 21% years Reach council has been fun- ctioning under a zoning by- law which may not be legal. residents who wish to object to portions of the amend- ment have been given no opportunity to do so. A number of people have been given permission by council to use land in controversial ways, such as the opening Hospital Report Week Ending July 19 Admissions ............ 40 Births .................... 4 Deaths .................... 2 Emergencies ............ 139 Operations ..... fons 5% 3 14 Discharges .............. 35 Remaining ............. .39 of gravel pits and in one case almost a garbage dump, despite the fact that the by law authorizing these (continued on page 16) On vacation The Port Perry Star office will be closed for summer vacation from Friday evening, August 10 until Mon- day morning August 20. July 25.1973 No. 40 Protest groups ask for delay in landfill decision Close to 100 hundred peo- ple crowded into the com- munity centre at Blackstock yesterday morning to list their objections to the pro- posal of Mr. Harvey Amb- rose to turn a 20 acre grave! pit on his 450 acre farm into a sanitary landfill site for the dumping of industrial garbage. Only two people volun- teered to Ambrose. Among the objectors were Reeve Garnet Rickard of Darlington township, Coun- cillor Donald Frew of Cartwright, Councillor Slew of East Whitby, Bill Dawes of the Central Ontario Plan- ning Board, Mr. McTavish of the Ontario-Durham Pond Owners Assn., Dave Smith of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority and Don Welsh of the Durham Federation of Agriculture. "Most speakers support Mr. voiced Woman injured in A DANGEROUS CORNER Pictured abéve is one of several accidents which occurred at the corner of Scugog and Union Streets in Port Perry during the last week. This one injured Mrs. George Jackson, driver of the '72 Chev, and Mr. Lloyd Brillinger of Newmarket, driver of the, '69 tractor trailer. The accident happened at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, objections on the grounds that the dump may polute water systems in the area, or that chemicals from the landfill site may seep into Oshawa Creek which is about half a mile south of the gravel pit. Objections were raised on the grounds that sufficient notice had not been given. According to law all abuting neighbours and all concer- ned government bodies must be notified directly. It was pointed out that the nearest neighbour, Mr. Shoobridge had not been notified. Neither had the conservation authority or the Township of East Whitby. Notice is also supposed to be given through ads in local papers. Ads were run in the PORT PERRY STAR and the Bowmanville Statesmen, but a large number of Oshawa people complained that the ad had not been placed in the Daily Times. The only other serious objection, and one which was expressed by a number of speakers, was that the proposal came from, 'pri- vate enterprise."" Such speakers suggested that if landfill sites are needed they should be operated by the state through the vehi- cle of regional government. At one point Mr. Ambrose was asked if he would be willing to withdraw his pro- posal until regional govern- ment takes effect January 1. He said he was not willing. Mr. Ambrose opened the hearing by claiming that he has not been able to put his land to any worthwhile use. He said that a building he erected on the site was van- dalized and burned down. Since then the site is used by motorcycle gangs, adults (continued on page 11) WER Uh truck, We car collision July 18. Mrs. Jackson was charged with failing to stop at a stop sign. There were so many accidents in the Port Perry area last week that it is impossible to report all of them. For pity sake -- be more careful.
