+ Allan Lawrence protests HC. Crowell appointed proposed riding change Allan Lawrence is fight- ing to save his riding of Northumberland - Durham from extinction under a proposed change in the fed- eral electoral boundaries. The final proposals of the federal electoral boundaries were tabled in the House last week and Mr. Law- rence told the Oshawa Times that unless an object- tion is laid within 30 days, the proposals will become law. If they do, his riding will disappear from the map, with parts of the riding being added to two other existing ridings. "If I was inclined to be of a suspicious nature, | might begin to suspect that some- one was trying to get rid of me by abolishing the riding I represent," said Mr. Law- rence, a former provincial cabinet minister. ' A bill was before the House last week which would suspend the commis- sion's operations until Dec. 31, 1974, but Mr. lawrence said that if this bill does not pass before teh 30-day limit expries, the commission's proposals will become law. He, said he intends to line up the support of nine other MPs and present a notice of motion in the House to have the proposals debated. "MOST UNFAIR" 7 'To me, the procedure of the commission has been most unfair, in as much as the final proposals are so radically different from what the commission first suggested for this part of Ontario. Mr. Lawrence said the commissions proposals would: We have many students YOU NEED TO: e Do those painting, cleaning jobs you'v "IT'S GOOD BUSINESS" eager and anxious to work this summer! Carve up completely his own riding of Northum- berland-Durham, with part of Durham being added to Victoria riding and the ba- lance of Durham being added along with Northum- berland, to the present Prince Edward-Hastings riding. 2. Transfer part of the Prince Edward-Hastings riding to the present Hast- ings ridings. 3. Add the Haliburton area of the existing riding of Victoria-Haliburton to the Unhappy with attitude - That Reach Township Reeve Arthur Catton is unhappy with the attitude of the provincial government was made abundantly clear at the last regular meeting of council. Council discussed briefly recommendations made by existing riding of the Mus- koka-Parry Sound, with the addition of part of Durham to Victoria. Mr. Lawrence said he found it "'strange'" to have the bill to freeze the activit- ies of the commission tabled in the house for first read- ing on the day before the commission's proposals were released, and ques- tioned if "someone" was trying to "slip something by' the House. "We definitely want the commission's proposals de- bated out in the open," said the Conservative MP. the county school board regarding the region plan, and one councillor wondered how much atten- tion Queens Park was likely to pay to the elected trus- tees. "They are turning a deaf ear to everyone," Reeve Catton commented. Festival sold out The sold right out sign went up on the box offfice of the Saturday performance at the Academy Theatre in Lindsay. "How the Other Half Loves," the Kawartha Summer Theatre's first production of the 1973 sea- son, drew an overall 75 percent attendance. Jack Northmore starred in the play and his perfor- mance drew rave comments from critics of Peterbo- rough and Lindsay papers, and from the public. Dianne Nyland, brought to Lindsay for the production, also got unanimous praise.
