Hold simulated disaster drill - Community Memorial- Hospital has had a disaster plan developed for the pur- pose of treating the arrival of 10 or more patients in the emergency department with only the resources of the hospital and community available. On Thursday, June 14th, the Community Memorial Hospital put the Disaster Plan into effect. Seventeen '"casulaties" from a simu- lated school bus accident started arriving shortly after 7 p.m., via ambulances and vehicles manned by the staff of Mr. C. Brignall and the Port Perry Volunteer Firemen. Dr. P. Larsen and hospital staff members met the vic- tims at the east entrance. Victims were quickly diag- nosed and transferred to the proper treatment area. Dr. J. Hammett and nursing staff were prepared in the emergency department as the victims progressed to this area. The front office was set up as a control centre and personnel were directed, upon their arrival, by Mrs. E. Jean Gray, Mrs. D. Watson and Mr. J. Van- Camp. Visitors and rela- tives of casulaties were guided to the cafeteria. The casualties were made up to represent various types of injuries such as, fractures, shock, hysteria, rescucitation, burn cases and amputation patients. Mrs. Judy MacColl, In- service Education Officer, has chaired a committee which has been responsible for the organization of a disaster planned implemen- tation of a disaster drill. Mr. Julie Roberts, from the emergency Health Services, Toronto, was on hand to evaluate and recommend improvements to the Disaster Plan. Also present, were representa- tives from the local Emergency Measures Organization in Oshawa. The Hospital sincerely appreciate all the help given by the staff and the volunteers - the Firemen, the Ambulance attendents, Emergency Health Services, emergency Measures Organization, and especially, the "patients" who were a very necessary part to the Disaster Plan. Through a trial run, the hospital is able to evaluate the merits of the existing plan and thus improve it before encountering a real disaster.
