Mr. Van Camp showed the STAR a thick file which he said was full of letters supporting the campaign, "some of them with 50 signatures." The administrator explained that the closing was proposed on November 21 by the Ministry of Health as part of the provincial governments bud- get cutting program. He said thatsixof the wings eight beds are used for obstetrics and that last year 120 babies were born there. Mr. Van Camp explained that, although the wing will not be able to be used for patient care if it closes, it will not go entirely unused. He did not indicate what the space may be used for. Indications are that if the wing closes the hospital will try to absorb maternity staff into other departments, so no one will lose their job. doctor explains proposal Dr. John Hammett ex- plained the government pro- posal to a meeting of the Cartwright-Reach-Scugog- Port Perry Residents and Ratepayers Assn. last Thurs. night. The doctor said that by deducting the amount of provincial grant which has been proposed as an addition to the Uxbridge budget from the amount to be taken off Port Perry's budget you would come up with a total saving of $8,000 a year if the maternity services of both hospitals are amalgamated at Uxbridge. With 120babies a year born in the Port Perry area that comes toa saving of $66 and some cents per baby. However ,Dr. speculated, it is entirely possible that there will be no saving at all. The doctor suggested that most hus- bands willbereluctant to take S S Hammett ° atu rday, their wives" all the way to Uxbridge when oshawa is closer If local doctors are not able to get to the Oshawa hospital, and if substitution can nol be arranged, special ists may be used more frequently. The cost of specialist fees" are much higher than the cost of having family doctors deliver babies. Inadditionto the possibility of higher in hospital costs Dr. Hammett also suggested that expectant mothers may have to travel to Oshawa for as many as 15 pre natal check ups. "Hell" commented one young man, "It would cost me more than $66 to take my wife PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Feb. 14th, 1973 -- 21 or baby wing to Oshawa and back 15 times." From Queens Park point of view the existence to two maternity wings within 20 miles of each other is a waste, in view of the fact that both operateatlessthans0percent capacity. The 120 births here last year represent 2. beds a week inuse. If the story is the same in Uxbridge it would be possible to double up the two wings and still have one bed empty, on the average. Whichever argument wins, the STAR will learn of the decision and pass the infor- mation along to you next week. Ratepayers lor Reg Rose, "But it is nol necessarily our responsib- ility to tell them. We don't have the answers ourselves." Councillor Rose expressed the opinion that, "The pro- vince has not done a very good public relations job on this one." Reeve "Kenny agreed. "The questions you can't answer are the really important ones," he said. County reeves are to meet with a provincial govern- ment official Friday, and council is hopeful that it may getsome answers then. In the meantime, the village clerk has been asked to begin preparing a recommended 'brief to be presented on behalf of Port Perry. About the only thing council could advise the clerk to include for sure is that Port Perry wants Port Hope and Cobourg to remain included in the region. "It is to our advan- tage to have them in" Councillor Rose said, "'other- wise Oshawa will have such a majority." If the ratepayers associ- ation does not have its meeting until Feb. 22 it will be too late to have any rec- commendations included in the village council brief. Council intends to discuss its brief on the 20th. The Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and Oshawa City Council have both contacted the federal government and urged it to go ahead and build the new Pickering Airport.
