: UGAR AND Seice| BILL certain lack of novelty, had presented him with his third set of twins. And similar garbage. THE WEATHER. Same old jazz as we get today. "Probabilities: Fair weather; stat- ionary or higher temperature." In other words, it's going to stay miserable or improve. What's new? Bubthe real fun of an old newspaper is the advertisements, as they are today. Even then, the auto manufacturers took a lot of space. You had the choice among a the Gray Dort, the Franklin, and something called the Lexington. But the copy hasn't changed much, Instead of pewer brakes, you had the "one-finger emergency brake." Instead of anti-freeze, you had the Franklin's "Direct aircooled. No water to boil or freeze." Wonder what happened to that one? And instead of the 120 percent performance promised for today's cars, the Gray Dort ad said it would take care of 80 percent of a motor car's work. Wonder what happened to Dear Sir: Surely the time has come for people to stop and look around at just what we are doing to our fellow man. To take one day and study our souls; where are we going - as a World - as a Country - as a Human Being. Try to remember the last time we did something nice for someone' ese, without their knowing. To go to a friend and tell him you're glad he is a friend. Have patience and under- standing for the opposite point of view. Remember the last time you did something for your spouse, a -tender kiss, a praising word, a teasing that. 50c. This was live theatre. At Shea's there was a nine-act vaudeville show. Prices? 25¢ to 50c. What's new? I should tell you? And in a coloured supplement of the time, there are full-page ads for such things as chewing gum, Bon Ami for whitening your shoes, Borden's Milk, and Pebeco tooth- paste. Can you believe? In a recent Macleans, Canada's 'national magazine," there were 126 pages of writing and just over 20 pages of liquor advertisements. So what's that copy writer. But among the names are many old, familiar ones. Mason & Risch. Phono- graphs? Kellogg's Corn Flakes. Shirriff's Marmalade. Horlicks' Malted Milk. Red Rose tea. And the all-too-familiar ads in tiny type for aids with dandruff, piles, underarm hair remover for ladies, kidney pills, liver pills, rheumatic remedies. What's new? There isn't exactly an entertainment section, as such, but the King Edward Hotel stfered a dinner de luxe for $1.50, with music by Romanelli's orchestra. The Alexandria was presenting ROADS OF DESTINY with Florence Reed. And the Princess suggested La La Lucille, with music by George Gershwin. Evenings, $2.00. Don't give up courting, just because you are mar ried. She's still a woman and loves to be treated as one. Bul your marriage is give and take, let him know that he'is a man and needed not just to put food on the table and a roof over your head but needed because you love him and couldn't do without him. Marriage is two separate people as one, if we could put ourselves second or third perhaps more people would find peace and love. Look at your children and ask yourself, "Am I a good parent? What can I do to be better?" Our children did not ask to be brought into this world, we create them through an act of love which must not stop there. We may be tired or troubled but they do not understand, if we put ourselves out a little our children will look back on their youth as happy time where the bond of love was strong. If you can earn your child's respect, then your heartaches will surely be lightened as they grow. Let's look at our Com- munity and try to under- stand why our Councils and Governments do what they do. If we would all get involved in some small way, our troubled world would stand a better chance of survival. We have Pollution, Wars, Bigotry, Starvation, Hate, Greed, the list is endless.. So in this Christmas Season let us take the time to look at ourselves and see where we - are headed. No, I don't have the answers, just a vision of a better World than this. Richard E. Drew.
