" s ° » & . ps Herbert Buckland 90 years, Dec. 30 Mr. Herbert Buckland, Port Perry's only surviving Boer War veteran, will be commemorating two events on December 30: his 90th birthday and the 25th anni- versary of his retirement. Born in Wiltshire County, Great Britain, on December 30. 1882, Mr. Buckland en- listed in the British Army at the age of 18 and was sent to South Africa after the Boer War broke out in 1899. Before reaching South Africa he spent some time guarding Boer prisoners on St. Helena, the forlorn island fortress which had previously housed a more illustrious guest; Napoleon Bonaparte. Buckland came to Canada in 1910 and married a Norwegion girl of previous acquaintance in 1911. When the first World War flared up the couple returned to the UK, where Buckland re- joined his old regiment. Thé stamp collection is extensive; for example, his "number one" book contains a variety of "penny blacks", the first paper stamp issued by Britain, dating back to the early 1800's. He has. honored by being named a Fellow of the Royal Philate- lic Society of Canada and also a Fellow of the Cana- dian Philatelic Society of Great Britain. He has many volumes of old letters, too. The prize number is a letter mailed in England in 1663. The Middle English handwriting is clearly legible. When not tending his African Violets, much of the Boer veteran's last ten years has been spent working on these collections.
