Real Estate is still your best Investment SELL: RENT +» SWAP 'HIRE * BUY * SELL RENT Health standards for mineral waters National Health and Wel- fare Minister, Marc Lalonde, today announced that new standards are -being de- veloped for mineral waters. .The standards will require that mineral waters be free from harmful coliform bac- teria and be obtained entirely from a natural undeground source. Manufacturers will be re- quired to show on the label the fluoride content in terms of parts per million as well as the total dissolved min- eral salt content in parts per million. This new labelling re- quirement will become effective at the wholesale level on January 31, 1973 but there is no intent to recall products already available on the retail market. Analyses of fluoride levels in mineral waters conducted recently by the Health Pro- tection Branch have shown, that products on the Can- adian market contain from less than 1 to more than 9 parts per million of fluoride. "I wish to emphasize, "The Minister said," that there is - no evidence the fluoride levels in mineral waters represent an immediate hazard to the health of Canadians." "These products have been used in moderate amounts for many centuries without apparent ill effects. Furthermore, available evi- dence in the scientific lit- erature on the safety of mineral waters does not permit establishing a max- imum safe level of fluoride or other minerals at this time" he said. Staff of the Health Protec- tion Branch will be conduc- ting extensive investigations to obtain the scientific infor- mation necessary for this purpose. The Minister expected that these data would be avail- able in a few months time. In the meantime, con- sumers will be able to - purchase products with the 2 fluoride and mineral salt level of their choice. Pending clarification of the matter, Mr. Lalonde suggested in the interest of prudence that consumers and particularly children under 10 exercise restraint in the consumption of mineral waters with high levels of fluoride and min- eral salts.
