Robert Kenny was re- elected Reeve of Port Perry, Monday and defeated his opponent, Gerald Jackman with 182 votes in the most exciting municipal election held in the Village for quite a number of years. 'This is Mr. Kenny's third term as the chief executive of the local council. In his first attempt in 1968, Mr. Kenny Gord Goode returned as trustee Gordon Goode in his third bid for the position of trustee on Ontario County Board. of Education was successful. Dr. John Hammett who had decided not to run, following nomination, but too late to have his name removed ' from the ballot pulled a considerable amount "of votes, despite the fact he is arelatively new resident and he never campaigned for office. Mr. Goode pulled 849 votes in Port Perry, in Scugog Township 319 and East Whitby Township 515 for a total 1,683. Dr. Hammett scored 534, 184 and 299 in the same order of polling places, for a total of 1,017. opposed and won over J. J. Gibson who held the position as reeve for more than a decade. Two years ago he was unopposed and was acclaimed to the position of « reeve. : Topping the polls for the three positions of councillors was again Grant McDermott with a smaller margin than he did two years ago. The two other members elected are both new to council procedures. Rev. Reg Rose and Robert Brinkman were successful in their bids for office and ended up with a tie vote. } Unsuccessful in his second attempt for a seat on Port Perry Council was Howard Crowell Reeve in Scugog Cliff Crowell succeeded in his first attempt for the position of Reeve in Scugog Township. He defeated Mrs. Grace Love, deputy-reeve in the present council, who also made her first attempt to gain the top position. Both candidates have pre- vious experience on council, Mr Crowell with four years as councillor and Mrs. Love, first elected to council in 1965 and then succeeded in her bid for deputy-reeve in 1968. Mrs. Helen Redman was given an acclamation for the position of deputy-reeve. The Ministry has announced that the operating budgets for on-going programs and ser- vices should be prepared on a basis of an increase not exceeding 5 percent of- the 1972 approved maximum allowable net operating costs. This 5 percent in- crease must cover increased salaries and supplies ex- pense. - The Ministry of Health has also decided to amalgamate Obstetrical facilities in cer- tain communities where Hall and newcomer Vin Walker. Deputy-reeve Phil Orde was returned to his seat by acclamation and so were the two members of the Hydro- Electric Commission, Ted Griffen and Bill Williams. The turnout for this elec- tion was much larger than normally of 2,166 eligible voters about 64 percent or almost 1,400. made use of their franchise. Christie In his second bid for the , Reach Township/ seat of reeve, Arthur Catton sue- cessfully made it with 'a margin of 201 votes over Lucille Gray, present deputy reeve. His first attempt was last year when he went up against municipal veteran Ed (Sam) Oyler who defeated Mr. Catton by 51 votes. Arthur McMillan, chal- lenged by Allan Bertrand captured the deputy-reeve position comfortably by over doubling Mr. Bertrand's 444 voles. ' Fred Christie repeated his success from last year and topped the polls for council with 936 votes.
