(Mr. Rundle resigned the.position of reeve end of June, and P. Figary succeeded him in this position). Work on the pro- ject began June 17, 1922, On Friday, September 29, hydro was officially turned on and it was the oldest residents ir the Village, Mr. John Rolph, 93, who was given the honour of turning on the switch. The following is part of the report Samuel Farmer, then editor of the Port Perry Star had to say about the event: "When John Rolph turned the switchin the Town Hall on Friday evening last, starting Hydro for Port Perry, a new era for the town began. Later, when in simple lang- uage, he pictured conditions of his boyhood days, it sounded like a romance. These were the days of tallow dips, of flint and steel; days when fire was jealously SENNA LSE es) I Ral) AY » guarded, when aboy would be sent witha tincup toborrow a live coal from one of the neighbours if the fire should go out. Mr. Wm. Kennedy, another old resident gave a reminis- cent address, calling to mind the work of the early Councils and paying special tribute to the - late Joseph Bigelow, whose work for the town will be remembered with grati- tude. Reeve Figary presided at the meeting, and made the gratifying announcement that the cost of installation would be only 75 percent of the estimate." Attheend of his report, Mr. Farmer writes: 'Musical numbers were given by Miss Grace Davis, Mrs. E.J. Jackson, Miss Bull and Miss Ross. STAR HAS FIRST MOTOR TURNED ON In the issue of October 26, 1922, Mr. Farmer, a staunch supporter of the hydro pro- ject writes proudly: 'The Star is enjoying the use of hydro power, ours being the first motor tobe used in town.
