Three areas of agreement prevailed at county council as members from the various municipalities out- lined their reaction to a plan to merge the townships, towns and villages into a . regional government within the county, . At an April meeting, the warden's advisory - com- mittee had proposed the following amalgamations: Mara and Rama; Beaverton, Cannington, Brock and Thorah; Port Perry, Reach and Scugog; Whitby and East Whitby; Uxbridge town and township and Scott; and - Pickering Village and town- ship and Ajax. All municipalities agreed with the proposal, with the exception of Whitby, East Whitby, Rama, Ajax and Pickering Township. Whitby Mayor Desmond Newman, who had been in- vited to sit in on the meeting, said it would be very difficult to consider a new amalga- mation, especially on the lines proposed by East Whit- b y. : The East Whitby repre- sentatives, Reeve John Howden and Deputy Reeve Douglas Marlow, said they were in favor of an amalga- - mation of East Whitby and the northern part of Whitby, instead of an amalgamation with' the entire town as' proposed by. the warden's . advisory committee. Ajax Mayor William LeGros, commenting on the proposal to amalgamate Pickering Township and Village and Ajax, suggested there should be two municipalities formed, one of Ajax and Pickering Village and the other of Pickering Township. Pickering Village Reeve Ross Murison said his village will probably lose its identity in regional government and is oriented to Ajax through water, sewers and hydro. Pickering Township Reeve John Williams said his town- ship's position will remain in "favor of amalgamation of all three municipalities because of geography and economics of scale. Rama Reeve Wesley Stitt told council his municipality had passed a resolution stat- ing it was more attuned to Orillia and wished to be part of the Orillia-centred region in a regional government because Rama people at- tended schools, stores, banks . * Thorah and Beaverton and and the library in Orillia. 'Mara Reeve: Bev Lewis said his council was four to one in favor of amalgama- tion with Rama, but wished to stay in Ontario County. + The representatives of Cannington, Brock, Thorah, and Beaverton said they had met and generally agreed on amalgamation of their municipalities. Thorah Reeve Russell Morrison said they wanted two amalgamations -- one of one. of Cannington and Brock. Warden William Gillespie said if Rama goes to the Orillia region, Thorah and Beaverton would accept Mara. : The representatiyes of Port Perry, Reach and Scu- 0 5 A A VEE AR Sl Br ER a ar 3 » { Y FICO gi 48 nl ' SRSA NATE Sak EARL LA aA Se ad a RANA TA AAT Rr a ASHI AMAL SRSA ORL STR PTIE A RTA CXF SORT DFR GIs te Opinions differ in the merger of municipalities gog said they had agreed on amalgamation in 1969 and were still in favor of it.
