The survey had no official sanctioning or power; and its purpose was strictly to let Reach Council know what = ¢ "said the ballots were with- publi¢ sentiment is towards regional government. The idea for: the survey - orignated from a floor motion at a ratepayers meeting held November 27. The proposal was seconded, and voted on unanimously by those present. Prior to election day, an objection was raised, and after a check of the Muni. cipal Act, the ballots were withdrawn. There are still room for more, and again merchants and organizations are requested to take part. As in former years, the parade will form at the High School grounds and march down Queen Street to the Post Office where Santa will hand out candy to the children of Port Perry and area. Streets approaching Queen will be blocked off about 11:30 a.m. and the parade «starts moving at 1 p.m. It is now anticipated five bands 1pm, Sat. will take pait in the parade. Two bands come from Toronto, one from Brampton and Markham and it is also possible the High School band will participate. Municipal said Dr. Dymond, "I 'merely quoted. what is in the Act, and suggested that the Municipal - Affairs Office be contacted." Section 105 of the Municipal Act is explicit and says "no person on the day of -the polling shall use - or deliver to any other person any card, ticket, booklet, book, circulating or writing soliciting votes for or against any candidate, or by- law, or for any affirmative or negative answer to any question, or haying upon it the name of any candidate." Since the survey was asking for an affirmative or negative answer, it could not legally be held on election day. Dr. Dymond added that the idea for the survey was a good one. Mr. Greenwood said that ; it was a "technical error" on his part in trying to conduct the survey 'on election day. He said he plans to conduct the survey in the future, 'unless of course the new council decides to do it." ACCIDENT REPORT , For the week of November "29th to December Sth, the OPP Whitby Detachment reports 38 motor vehicle collisions, resulting in 10 persons being injured, and causing $18,000 damage. The OPP also reports 53 general occurrences in- cluding 6 Tiquor offences, 3 thefts, 1 break and enter, 4 snowmobile complaints, and 1 snowmobile charge. Councillor Fred Christie $ first try at leaflet,- Councillor Armour NY McMillan Close battle for Reeve in Reach Twp. election The "voters of Reach Township have returned incumbent Reeve Ed "Sam" Oyler for another term of ®. office. In Township elections held Monday, | defeated former Reach Mr, Oyler - Councillor Arthur Catton by 51 votes. Incumbent Councillors Fred Christie and Armour McMillan were both re- elected to Council. And in his municipal politics, Neil Hunter was elected to a seat on Council. The two defeated Council candidates were Reg. Foster "and Mrs. Marg Wilbur. The battle for Reeve between Mr. Oyler and Mr. Catton was a close one, with a heavy Prince Albert vote in favour of-Mr. Oyler being the deciding factor. After five polls, Mr. Catton led by 12 votes. After eight polls, Mr. final . poll 'to come in was from Prince Albert, showing 123 to 63 in Mr. Oyler's favour, The total tabulation showed Mr, Oyler with 524 votes and Mr. Catton with 473. Of the three candidates elected to Council. Fred Christie had the strongest backing with 633 votes. He was followed by Armour McMillan with 562 and Neil Hunter with 551. Reg Foster polled 462 votes, and Mrs. Marg Wilbur had 289 sup- porters, "Cattofried by nine votes. The Mail service curtailed Mail service over the Christmas and New Year holidays will be vastly curtailed this year with both these holidays falling on a 'Saturday. Ushers of the Canada Post Office 'service should note the following hours of dispatch and delivery "and clip for reference over the December holiday season. The P.O. wicket will. close from Friday, December 24 at 5:45 until 8:30 a.m. on December 29, It will -be "closed again from.5:45 p.m. on December 31 until 8:30 a.m. on January 4. There will be no rural mail delivery -during the above dates, either. I~ However all mail deposited during the two periods mentioned above will be dispatched on the -afternoons of December 28 and January 3, respectively. Councillor Nell Hunter When all the returns had come in, each of the Council candidates was given the opportunity to address the audience in the Reach Township Hall. : Speaking first, Mrs. Wilbur said she 'enjoyed the campaign," and congratulated the winning candidates. Reg Foster thought the campaign was a "clean one, and is only fitting to congratulate the winners." He expressed hope that the Council would come to decisions both fair and just to all ratepayers in Reach Township. He also had kind words . for Mrs. Wilbur saying that if she should decide to run in future elections, her youth would be a definite asset. Neil Hunter, who will begin his first term as Councillor thanked all who voted, "especially those who supported me."" He said' he will try to uphold the faith the electorate showed in him during the next year. "Once again, I must thank you all," said Fred Christie, "lf am highly elated".
