SANITY Bon a we BI ES ah Rend Eh AN Hn VEN ~ Local dog wins championship noisy arena crowds * thanks to Zodie, a Great Dane owned + by Mr. Tony Sytsma of Port Perry has: recently won « Championship honours at the . Ottawa Kennel Club All Breed Championship Dog Show. . And Tony feels that part of the credit for the honours must go to the spectators and youngsters at the Port Perry Arena. Prior to the Ottawa Show, Tony would take Zodie to the arena as part of the training 'programme. The purpose for this was to get the dog "used to crowds of people, noise, commotion and confusion. Tony explains that if a dog is to win championship competitions, he must be trained to hold a pose "while being judged. A ~ dog's ability to maintain a pose is given-a lot of con- sideration by the judges. "When I first took Zodie to the arena, there were a few raised eyebrows," says Tony. 'But the kids were: just great. They really helped the dog to get over his natural nervousness and skitteshness." This somewhat unusual training method must have been effective because at the Ottawa 'show Zodie placed first in the Open Male class for Great Danes over-a year old. He then went on to place first in the overall cham- pionship, beating the top Great Danes from all the different classes. This last honour is quite a feat for a dog that is just 14 a4 months old. Great Danes usually require a longer period of time to mature to oiol 2 pionship caliber." * Kesselring' 5 in. the At 14 months, Zodie is not yet' full-grown. His owner says his weight will fill out a little more. Right 'now, the dog weighs about 140 pounds and stands nearly. 35 inches tall, He eats: 50 pounds of cereal dog food every two weeks, but Tony says his "appetite will taper off when he 'reaches his maximum weight. The Sytsmas bought Zodie about 11 months ago from the Dinso Kennels in Carmel, New York. This kennél has a history of producing some of the top Great Danes in North America. In championship com- petitions, judges take into consideration the breed- standard, overall ap- pearance, bone and teeth structure, and the dog's ability to hold a: pose. "Tony says that despite a Great Dane's massive size and awesome appearance, "they dre very, very gently with children, and make a good house pet." great Dane are. naturally mild mannered, even timid, "unless of course somebody tries to break into the house," adds Tony with a smile, : His plans now are to give Zodie a rest from training for a couple of months, and then start to prepare him for the United States National Finals to be held in New Yok State in the spring of Attentive Crowds enjoy "Arsenic and Old Lace" About six months ago, the Borelians, a new amateur theatre group in Port Perry presented their first stage production, Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's "You Can't take it with you", The play seen by some 600 people was well received and guaranteed that other- plays would be forthcoming. The second production of the 'young company was presented last Friday and Saturday to 600 - 700 people High School Auditorium, and again the dedicated group made a success of their 'effort. Joseph comedy "Arsenic and 'old Lace" had been chosen and except for a rather slow start in the early part of first act, the players kept a fast pace throughout the play. This production is not easy to perform. It demands a great 3: deal of co-ordination and co- operation -between . the players as well as stage hands, There is a great deal of action at all times and the cast is quite large and mistakes can easily be * made. But to the credit of all concerned only minor flaws, hardly noticeable occured. All participants, on and off stage deserve a great deal of credit and although reluc- tant to single out a player in an amateur performance, Paul Gouett as Mortimer "gave an outstanding con- ~ tribution to the performance.' Adding much to the suc- ¢ess was the excellent scenic production by Catherine Christie, the wardrobe by Bets Diamond and the lighting by Don Johnston. --And not to forget possibly the most important person in the production, Marion Pitz who proved herself a capable director.
