He's had te take another apartment, at $75. per month, "But even now," he says, "I'm a month . behind with the rent, and all the bills just seem to come at once." He has thought he may haye to take his phone out. "The car. payments are the most important thing," he says, 'because if you miss one of those, the bank doesn't fool around." Joe's wife Wendy, who the lay-offs has had to do some baby-sitting for extra money. Joe has thought of going to, "Foronto to look for work, but says, 'my family is here, naturally doesn't think very much of and I want to stay here." And he doubts if he'd find anything in Toronto this time of year anyway. How does he feel about General Motors? "Well," he says, *'I thought I'd be there for a year, at least to get some seniority." Would he go back to G.M. if called? "I really don't know. The pay is good, the _benefits are good, but 1 just 'don't know.. I'll probably never be called back ~anyway. When I was laid off, and I asked the foreman when I'd get called back, he said 'your guess is as good as mine,." Joe is fortunate in one way. "I guess I'm lucky for - that," says Joe, "since I've worked for. him twice before, and quit twice, And with a wife and family I can't be too fussy now.' ' But what if his 'old em- 'ployer had not offered him this job? What would he do then? Odd jobs, unem- ployment insurance, welfare? For a man with a family, or for anyone, it's not a pleasant thought. Yet Joe, with little formal education and no specialized skills rides the economic boom, and falls with the recession. And guys like Joe all across 'this country do the same. 6000060 ; Foundation Work, Etc. F & G CONSTRUCTION R.R. 4, Port Perry BUILDING & REMODELLING - Cottage Raising.
