Recreation And Playground Activities . By Jane Liddell Playground Director This summer for the first time, Port Perry will be carrying on a summer play- ground programme. This programme will last from July 6th, to August 21 and will hopefully involve as many young people as pos- sible. However, its success and acceptability will be en- tirely dependent upon' your interest and support, So far, I am sure you have- n't any idea about what's go- ing on and are probably ask- ing the big question -- what is it? Playground is a programe me which provides your child with opportunities for safe, wholesome & satisfying play in happy, carefree, yet creat- ive situations. It has not been organized to supply baby-sitting servi- ces, or to help keep children off the street (although it does) but has been organised in hopes of providing your child with a safe place to play; to teach him social, creative and physical skills; to develop 'good health through outdoor activities, and to build character by providing recognition, satis- faction, encouragement and opportunity to accept respon- sibility. First of all, Blaygrouni has been split into 2 divisions, according to age. The reason for this is that the interests of a younger and older child naturally differ and conflict may result. Also by having 2 groups, more individual at- tention and guidance may be given. The first group is known as Tot Lot and is for children ranging from ages 3 to 7. The other group will be comprised of young peo- ple ranging from age 7 up, | (no age limit) and is called Senior Playground. Senior Playground will be held on the ground of the Port Perry District Second- ary School, while Tot Lot will be held at R. H. Cornish Public School. Each play- ground will be staffed by 4 competant leaders, all of whom, will have received some. form of leadership training. This is very basically 'what the programme is, 'and it's purpose. In the forthcoming weeks I will be outlining more specifically some of the activities that wlil be 'car- ried out, and ohpefully an- ewer any questions you may have.
