Teacher Miss Gladys Joblin and somé 200 friends, relatives, and past students gathered at R.H, Cornish Public School Monday, May 26,1970 to help end a long and. successful career as a teacher. Ten of Miss Joblin's students from her first grade one class at Port Perry Public School were in attendance, Of her 31 years of teaching she taught one year at Scugog, three years at Caughnawaga, Quebec, four years at Bowmanville and 23 years here in Port Perry. A guest book was signed by each person present, and a short sing song started the evening. William Bradford, principal, and master of cere- monies, introduced the speak- ers. Roy Cornish, retired principal, spoke of when Gladys started to teach in Port Perry in the basement of the old school, which is now part of the high school, he also went on to tell how co-operat- ive and helpful she had been during his teaching career. Sam Oyler a retired teacher spoke of her character and how she was unselfish, loyal and most cheerful not only at school but at church and towards her town. : Miss Joblin thanked every- one, and she read a. very appropriate poem titled "On Being a Teacher". Gordon Goode, a school board trustee extended best wishes from himself and the Ontario County Board of Education. Mrs. Thelma Beare, a grade three teacher, told about the wonderful beginning and basis Gladys gave to each child start- ing out in school. Truly she is a dedicated person, for example this 1969-70 winter Gladys came to school sup- porting a walking cast. In appreciation a coffee table, an end table and a beautiful lamp were presented to Gladys Joblin. Kingsley, Miss Joblin's brother, from Toronto extend- ed his thanks from the family- and Gladys, also Dorothy her sister (Mrs. Westney) of Pick- ering was present to show their appreciation for this wonder- ful evening set aside for their sister. Miss Joblin cut the best. wishes cake made by Mrs. K, Watson, and the evening ended with a luncheon provided by the many thoughtful persons present.
