TT By Lenore Hawley Pickering High School The visit of the Theatre Hour Company is the high- light of the year in many schools, and we are fortun- ate in having a number of these visits in Ontario Coun- ty this year. The idea of taking theatre to the schools in the prov- ince came from the Crest Theatre," and the first tour- ing company was headed by Barbara Chilcott, "sister -of Donald and Murray Davis. This first tour took place in 1962, and I well remember four actors, including Miss Chilcott, in white blouses & black skirts or white skirts and black slacks playing on the school stage, and the only prop I can remember is a ladder. From that perfor- mance on, the Admisistration and English Department of the Pickering High School were completely sold on the Crest Hour Company. Each year the performance became a little more elabor- ate. The Hour Company pre- ferred their own stage set against the wall on the floor of the gym with the students - from Aristophanes' Birds and PORT PERRY STAR -- Thurs., February 19,1970 -- 19 - to film .the performance. The arrival of ETV was an | eye-opener. The students were a little awed by all the equipment necessary for the filming, and the staff real- ized the hard work and plan- ning in an ETV production. However, the idea of TV lent a certain glamour to all the proceedings. The title of the programme is Twenty. Centuries of Com. edy. - The stage is now an elaborate one, and so are the costumes. Items on the pro- gramme range from excerpts works by Sheridan, Chekhov and Leacock to The Bald So: prono by Ionescu. Careful planning has gone iito this show directed by Marigold Charlesworth, who is well- known in Canadian theatre, and the actors are experien- ced and talented. One service the Theatre Hour Company is offering this year is an especially im. portant one. A member of the Company takes fifty stu- dents and conducts a Work- shop for over.an hour. The Theatre Hour Comp- any travels by bus bringing their own equpiment to a school, setting it up and play- ing usually two performances and conducting a Workshop. In the fall the Company spent nine weeks in Northern Ont- ario. "Ontario - County - Board - of Education schools visited by the Theatre Hour Company this year are O'Neill Colle- giate and Vocational Insti- tute, Dr. F. J. Donevan Col- legiate Institute, Anderson Street Collegiate and Voca- tional Institute and the Pick- ering High School. grouped in a semi-circle around it. The stage at first was little more than a few. planks thrown down with a curtain at the back and a peg on which hung the dif- ferent cloaks and hats which constituted the onlv costume changes. From this make- shift stage, the actors held the students in absolute fas- cination. One year students from the Dunbarton High School joined us, and 1 was apprehensive of this perfor- mance. There were nine hundred students in that gym, and they were spell bound. Last year we were bitterly disappointed when the Com- pany could not include us in their tour. They had too many requests, and they had to refuse many schools." This year they came, and Educa- tional Television came too! Again the touring company, sponsored by the Department of Education, but now the Theatre Hour Company ad- ministered by Toronto's St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts had had too many requests, since both the Company and the Department of Education did not want to disappoint the schools in which they could not appear.
