Thisarticle is written to the Public clarifying the posits ion of some of the Northern school caretakers employ- | ed by the Ontario Board of Education, following ratification of a three year contract - January 3, 1970. | The Board presented a proposal to the Union zoning the County, North and South with salaries to be governed as North of the boarder, which is the Whitby Townline, a caretaker receives 20% less than one south of the boarder or approximately $1,000 less. In April 1970, he receives 156% less or approximately $900. less. By April, 1971, he still receives 10% less than a caretaker ~ south of the boarder. This salary differential affects approximately 8 to 10% of our 330 custodians for Ontario County. Some of our northern caretakers |, of six and seven years service will not receive any retroactive pay while "south" men receive approx- imately $400. for 1969. The manpower remains as was for the northern caretaker, (approximately !, 20% less than south areas) and receives only 80% of the salary of the southern caretaker. In our | opinion, this is discrimination of the highest order. Our Union Local 218 apparently deemed this issue of less importance in order to maintain the other issues affecting the larger south majority. Does this mean the north should subsidize the majority York County, west of us received a settlement for custodial employees at parity. Durham County, east of us received a settlement for custodial employees at parity. Was parity not the policy of our Provincial Government when it issued equalized Grants to the County Boards at the start of their new Educational Program?
