"The festivities began- with a family dinner in Port Perry United Church on Thursday, ~ May 22nd. Relatives gathered from England, Toronto, Oak- 'ville, Montreal Quebec, Cop- 'per Cliff and Port Perry. It was a very happy meal in a gaily decorated Church, with the opening of gifts in Church Lounge afterwards. Delarue, chest surgeon, Toronto General Hospital, and assistant pro- fessor in: surgery, University of Toronto. Dr. Delarue's topic was on smoking: and respiratory. di- sease, and he gave a startling 'and factual talk concerning thé dangers of smoking, us- ing a film strip "Dyjng for a Smoke" to accentuate his points. The speaker _ said that, for a long time, they had not dared to - tell' the public the whole story--for the implications are terrify- ing; but that the public was now beginning to take the story seriously. He shot down many of the 'misconceptions of the public concerning 'cigarette _smok- ing. To the many people who ask "Why quit - damage al- 'ready done?" the doctor stat: ed thatthe body 'can repair nfuch df the damaged tissue. He said"-the difficulty in stopping smoking cannot be minimized -- but it has been over-emphasized. There are now ten million confirmed 'stopped - smokers' now in North America. A question and answer period followed. The speaker was introdu- ced by Dr. Keith Madgwick, who brought greetings: from the Ontario County Medical Association. Mrs. C. D.-Rus- sell, vice-president of the TB- RD Association thanked the speaker, Alderman Gordon- Atters- ley brought greetings from Mayor A. Hayward Murdoch, Oshawa, Dr. W. H. Gross, representing the Ontario De- partment of Health stated how proud the department was with the latest develop- ments of the Ontario County 'TBRD Association. Dr. H, T. McClintock, Director, Gage Institute Chest Clinic, con- gratulated the Association on the marked increase in ser- vices rendered to the county. _Annual reports were pre- sented in book form. In his report, Dr. H. A. Richmond, chairman; medical advisory committee, stated that the during --the-- past ~year had been the opening of the new X-Ray Clinic and Testing Centre. Dr. John Chmara, chair- man, case findiftg committee, mentioned in his report that the "association had assisted .in x-ray screening. teachers, food handlers, barbers and hardressers. The association had also paid for all surveys conducted at Homes for the Aged in Oshawa, Whitby and Beaverton. The Department of Health has asked the association to organize an industrial mass survey in 1970, and the Ont- ario Department of Health is reserving a mobile. unit for the association to conduct-a multiphasic testing survey throughout the county, when the Oshawa survey has been completed. The Rev. Dr. H. A; Mellow, chairman, srehabilitation and social service, listed the many services rendered to county = patients suffering from TB, emphysema 'and other respiratory diseases.
